Engine RPM verified somthing with throttle I'm guessing

Postby ShawnAgne » Sun Oct 15, 2017 7:39 pm

Ok put an auto timing light on the Cub so it was reading off the coil and the #1 plug. It agrees with my induction tach I have on the tractor. I also tried both on the 300 and they agree with what it should be. At the slow detent it is doing upper 1800s RPM. The spring is all the way compressed but if I pull the throttle back past the last detent the engine slows down more. The throttle rod flexes but the motor does slow down. So something tells me that I got something going on with the throttle rod. I did put a bend in it from the original C60 motor because otherwise it was to long. Could it be this bend? Could the spring be to long?

Hi,
Did you mean in your first sentence above that you put on an automotive test tachometer, and it agreed with the other tach. You said timing light.
I sent you a PM.

do you have the throttle rod support bracket that bolts to the cylinder head supporting the rod?

Hi,
Below is a pic from TM Tractor, of the throttle rod clip, it bolts to the head, above the oil filter, to a hole drilled in the head. I'm not sure if a 184 engine, that you have in the Cub, has that hole. It is tapped, and a short bolt screws into it. It is sort of near a head bolt.
You can probably find it on the old engine, if you still have it. :)

Yes I have that rod. Clenn hit the nail on the head on a pm he set me. The governor rod that goes back to the carb isn't set right. I need to loosen the set screw and adjust that. Yes I mean automotive test tach that agreed with the other tach. Wish I had the day off to adjust it but will just have to play with it tomorrow when I get home from work.

Adjusted the lever going from the governor to the carb, engine now idles at a much lower RPM.
