Hi,
Below is a page from the owner's manual for the Cub 144 Cultivator. It shows the Universal Mounting frame, and how it is fastened on the Cub. It can be removed if you don't need to use it. It is an attachment, it doesn't come on the Cub standard.

Well, I got a '51 Cub about two years ago. It still had the original 6 volt system. I pretty much took the tractor down to nuts and bolts and reused what wasn't broken, including the 6 volt system. Installed a new battery, new battery cables, and a new wiring harness and I keep a battery tender on it when not in use and have never had a problem with it. I figure it was good enough for the tractor back in 1951 and it should be good enough now. I'm keeping the 6 volt system!
