Casting code T

Postby staninlowerAL » Sun Oct 29, 2017 9:11 pm

Is there any difference in the 1950 casting code T engine block and the 1972 casting code T engine block? I would like to change all the engine parts from my '72 Number Series casting code T block (which has domed pistons) to another casting code T block. TKS.

If you are asking if all the internal parts from a 1972 block will fit a 1950 block, I'm not sure but can't think of any that won't. You need to use the connecting rod bearings that fit the connecting rods. Fitting used pistons into used bores has its own complications but have nothing to do with the question. However, the 1972 block is an R8 and the 1950 is something else (R3, R4?). The 12 volt starter will probably run into the oil filter housing.

Thanks Jim. I totally forgot about the Rev number. I think I can work around the oil filter housing issue. I would prefer a R8 block but just in case..... something to think about.

Jim may have more experience with this than I do, but I would be wary of installing dome top pistons in a 1950 block with the same age head. If you do, ensure you hand turn the engine over by hand before getting too far along. You may have clearance issues.

I didn't think about that question. You should check clearances between dome pistons and an early head.

The head is OK and came from a 154 so that should not be a problem.
