Oil still leaking out of oil filter cap

Postby ShawnAgne » Tue Nov 28, 2017 11:13 am

Had posted previously about oil leaking out of the bolt area on the oil filter cap. Was told I needed a brass washer. Well I though why wouldn't a regular washer work. So put to washers in there. Still leaks. So here is the question is the brass washer sized perfectly for the bolt and this is why the other washers are leaking? Or is there something else going on here.

It should be a copper washer (or nylon). Those are soft enough that they will compress when you tighten the bolt and form a seal.

Brass will compress helping to seal it, regular washer won't.

Edit: Bob beat me to it.

If a brass or copper washer doesn't fix your problem your cap may be caved in and won't seal whatever you put on it. A regular steel washer will not work in this application.

I just had this problem this weekend. Copper crush washer with a tight fit O ring between the washer and the housing cured it.

I have made washers out of medium thickness gasket material and put between the cover and original washer. They lasted 2 or 3 oil changes before having to replace. Is your cover one of the early flat ones, or one of the later cupped ones with the raises center? The flat ones were bad to warp.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Or auto parts store. They usually come in an assorted package. If you can find an old guy that's been around awhile he'll know what you need. Someone that can only read the computer screen based on make/model/year will probably be lost.

Tell your parts counter guy you need a banjo washer. Take the bolt with you or just measure it.
They seal 2000 psi brake pressures....should hold the cubs 40 psi...

Hi,
The 184 engine in your Cub should have this style of oil filter cover in the pic below, from TM Tractor.
They are stamped steel. They need the copper washer to seal the cover bolt, it is what IH used, like TM Tractor says in their listing above.
Sometimes they don't seal perfectly, even with the copper washer. I use a little non hardening sealer on the washer then. :)

The CNH part # for the washer is: 25352D. They are nearly $10.00 per washer.
The identical McMaster washer (1/2 " x 3/4 " x .045”) part # is: 94397A363. They are $7.88 for a pack of 10

The OEM washer is copper, not brass or bronze.

Just finished changing oil (30 wt.) I use year round. filter, cork gasket and copper bolt washer( from TM), I find after draining oil pan and filter housing ,removing filter bolt ,cover and gasket I wipe the top of the filter housing clean. I then wipe a little clean oil on the housing top wipe oil on both sides of the gasket and on the cap that comes in contact with the gasket, I also wipe a little clean oil on both sides of the copper washer install bolt then tighten , and hope for no leaks. This seems to work well. Question how often should one change oil on a parade show tractor, about 12 to 15 hours run time a year. I know the maint. book says every 120 hours, but does once a year sound right. Thanks

Jim, I have 2 cubs that work pretty hard and regular and the one with the loader on it that gets use comparable to your parade tractor. They all get changed every spring. That includes full lubrication, greasing all fittings, including clutch and front axle pivot, checking finals, and changing transmission if it is cloudy, as well as oiling fan and cleaning air cleaner
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
