Rotella HD

Postby maybeacub » Fri Dec 01, 2017 5:16 pm

I want to change the fluids soon before snow plowing season starts. My nearest IH dealer is over an hour away. My nearest TSC is 40 minutes. I took a ride there to see what they had to substitute for Hytran and the choice was Travelers or Rotella HD. Both list meeting MS-1209. Any reason to use or not use these products? I would go with the Rotella of the two being name brand.

I think either would be alright. It comes down to personal preference.

I don't think it matters anymore. If it meets MS-1209 or IH B-6 specs, I guess it's fine.
Most brands that I have trusted for years have changed hands long ago.

Hi,
Below is a page from the Cub owner's manual telling how to change the Touch Control fluid, and remove the air from the system. Be sure to do what it says in paragraph 4 to remove the air from the system. Maybe you knew already.

http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... e%2064.jpg

When checking the Touch Control fluid, always have the arms in the rear or down position. This is what IH said to do.
The fluid rises in the unit as the arms go to the rear. There is an airspace in the top of the unit. If you fill it with the arms ahead, you will overfill the unit.
Also, if you check the fluid with the arms ahead, it will look low on fluid, even if it has the right amount in it. :)

Thanks Glen for the heads up on the TC.

Thomas, I didnt find the HD in a search so wanted to play it safe and ask.

I'm new to Cubs so its all a learning experience for me. Trying not to do any damage.

Hi,
You didn't say what year Cub you have. The Cub owner's manual has much info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. It tells how to do lots of different maintenance in it. :)

It’s no problem. It’s just you’ll get several different opinions and they will all echo previous posts even though you’ve added the rotella to the question. Some will swear hytran is the only way to go, some will say as long as it’s 1209 compatible, and some don’t care. If you’re like me, there’s no dealer nearby, so I use TSC traveller brand. You go right ahead with the rotella since it’s compatible. These things used 10wt non detergent when they first came out. I have even used that before. No issues
