Primer and Paint selection

Postby J3 Driver » Fri Dec 01, 2017 10:12 pm

So yesterday I picked up a snow plow for my son for Christmas. It need blaster and painted. Wondering what all you guys recommend for paint. Looking for something that will hold up well as I know he’ll be using it for more than pushing snow.

I’m thinking a good epoxy primer but not see if a top coat.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Hi,
Maybe you can tell if it is an original white blade, it looks like white paint in your picture.
White blades were made when Cubs became yellow and white, I think, which was 1964 and later.
A 1957 blade was red, I think, not totally sure though. Probably someone else knows.
Probably the IH paint in spray cans that TM Tractor sells would be good. I have read on here that the guys like it.
Below is the listing for them. Probably one of the experts knows about the colors.

Below is the Cub 54 Blade owner's manual, if you don't have it. It has info for putting it on the Cub. :)

I tried both brands tractor supply carries, Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm & Implement Gloss, International Harvester Red is by far better, I used the majic paint on an old tiller I restored, paint fades and not really strong (even used the hardener they sell for it) the cub I used the rust-oleum. Bought by the qt, when I did large areas on the cub, I would thin it out a bit and shoot it with a gun for a smoother finish, linkage and blade I brushed on.... Even had a rattle can of it for small parts (keep in mind paint in can is really thinned out and not as strong), did my whole cub and 54a with it and has held up nice and trust me the blade was in pretty rough shape when I got it. did some snow plowing, some grading with blade on belly and some leveling with blade up front, couple small touch ups it was like new again

Just now in the process of restoring a Cub Grader Blade. I have had the parts sandblasted and have primed them (brushed on but can be sprayed) with Sherwin Williams B50NZ6 #6401-11746 Kem Kromik Brown Red Oxide (It sells in gallons so I had them put up a gal in 1 qt cans). This primer cleans up with Xylene. Shelf life is 3 yrs. I am going to paint the blade assembly with IH 2150 Red from a rattle can(s).

Best long term coating, IMO, for a blade would be a zinc rich epoxy primer with a good urethane topcoat. Our local no-brand auto parts store mixes custom color 2 component urethane's. Make sure if your doing the spraying to wear proper personal protective gear.

I second the high opinion of the zinc rich epoxy primer. Huge fan here. My favorite all-round primer is PPG’s Dimetcote 302H. For a blade though, Dimetcote 9H is super tough.

I second the importance of PPE too! Our tractor hobby isn’t worth dying over!

Please explain "I second the importance of PPE too! Our tractor hobby isn’t worth dying over!" because the 2 part stuff scares the crap out of me! You can tell I am pretty ignorant about paint chemistries.

Of course! My bad. You would think I could be able to retain some of the acronyms, but alas I guess am getting to old to catch on so don't do well with written short cuts. Sorry, be gentle.

If you plan to use a hardener that contains isocyanates, you MUST use a supplied air breathing system and full body vapor protection clothing. Failure to do so is risking your life. These chemicals can and will enter your body through the lungs, skin, eyes and just about anywhere else you can think of. As I said in another similar thread, if you can smell the paint, you are being exposed.
