Starting Problems

Postby Steve Ruddy » Sun Dec 03, 2017 5:05 pm

I installed a new battery, cables are good too, and I just put a new switch on the starter. It started really well about a half a dozen times now nadda. If I turn on the lights and try to start they dim and go off. The starter brushes were good.

I ended up taking the two cables off the starter and cleaning them. Started right up. I guess it doesn't take much for a bad connection as they didn't look that bad. Hopefully that's all it needed.

Yep, these 6V systems are highly affected by a high-resistance junction somewhere in the loop due to the increased current draw. Glad to hear you found the culprit.

I would like to add this info, after many attempts trying to figure out why my Cub was so difficult to start ,I finally found the problem! IT is very important to have at least 2 gauge battery cables ! Mine were 4 gauge, a few weeks ago I saw an article on this fine forum that a fellow asked what size wire was recommended to rewire his Cub, after I saw the replies, I checked the wire size on my Cub, saw that they were too small and replaced! What a difference! Fires up almost instantly :thanx:
