That's because it is a fast hitch version, instead of the standard drawbar mounted version.
In order to keep pressure from the auger's engagement from transmitting to the fast hitch lift rod and it having to bear all the weight, the flip down stand becomes important to keep things from breaking.

Makes sense but ours has it too and no fast hitch. Maybe it was a later addition to all. I can't imagine using one on a Cub,the tail must wag the dog. I know it gives our Ford a workout
