After seafoam backfire and no start

Postby BJM68 » Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:09 pm

I had sprayed seafoam into Allen keyed access on manifold- ran tractor for several minutes after-it did loosen some deposits That was last night Tonight no start but a few major backfires Most productive part of evening was finding rain capNow known as missile with a lid I took carb off and checked for debris- none Float was free but there seemed to be excessive amount of fuel flow At this point I am more lost than your average carpenter

Engine turns over strong with white smoke but does not fire as if it would start Checked one plug it was wet but not soaked Opened carb up and float was free and not saturated Lot of fuel runs out of bottom of carb Low ceiling in garage so will continue outside tomorrow if temperature is better than today's We started day at minus thirty five degrees Celsius with wind about minus thirty Fahrenheit

Have you done a compression test? Lots of backfiring indicates either valve(s) stuck open or timing issue. Have you set the timing?

The sea foam may have loosened larger pieces of carbon, one or more of which is now holding a valve open.Continued efforts to crank it may allow the debris to exit, but you may have to pull head and clean her up inside. You could pull the valve cover and check to see if all valves move their full stroke before pulling head.

Yep, that's what I was getting at. Very easy to do a compression test first so that you can be certain of a stuck valve before tearing into things, especially considering that you're working on this outside in the cold.

I am not a fan of the "nitrous injection" method of the seafoam in the vacuum port on the manifold. too much too fast and it misses the rings and fuel system.

In the future use the seafoam in the oil and the gas per the instructions. It will loosen thing more slowly and reduce the chance of this happening.

Agreed. By injecting the Seafoam directly into the manifold, the Seafoam was not atomized as it would have been going through the carburetor. Additionally, you were burning straight Seafoam with no or very little gasoline.
The manufacturer of Seafoam makes a product called Deep Creep. Same formulation, except in an aerosol can. I've had good success spraying it into the carburetor air intake. Lots of white smoke, though.

I've had that happen from a strong dose of Sea Foam too. Engine runs fine but won't restart after plugs cool down.

BJM, I think the main problem is that the hammer in your avatar is not big enough. :P
