Drive shaft in distributor
I am changing the magneto on my one tractor to a distributor, I pulled the distributor out of a parts tractor and when I did the little drive shaft fell out on the ground and I have no idea how it goes back in the distributor to time it, I looked through my manuals and don't see how to put in back in,

Re: Drive shaft in distributor
When you get the engine set with TDC on compression stroke, turn the dist shaft so the two "ears" on the shaft will fit. You will need to observe where the rotor points at that so #1 plug wire will be connected correctly. If it is not pointed where you want it to be then you will have to adjust it by either removing the dist body from the plate or remove the whole assy and turn the shaft where you want the rotor to be, then pull out the shaft enough to turn it without moving the rotor and realign the "ears" to the correct mesh point and push the dist shaft back in to mesh with the dist gear.

Re: Drive shaft in distributor
That position changes when you change the distributor position relative to the shaft. The important thing is that when you get it together as I described above is the wire to #1 plug is connected to the dist cap tower that the rotor is pointing to. This procedure is covered in detail in the Owners Manual, Battery Ignition. This manual was issued for converting a mag ignition to dist as you are doing. Cub instructions start on page 9.

Re: Drive shaft in distributor
Stick the shaft back in. Slowly rotate it clockwise (viewed from the front). You should be able to feel a slight increase in resistance when the distributor cam reaches the rub block on the points. The drive lugs should then be at about 35 degrees from horizontal in a 4 o'clock - 10 o'clock orientation. If not, pull it out and reposition it so it is. Recheck.
You should then be able to time/install per the usual instructions.
If you don't like the orientation of the wire connection on the side of the distributor, turn it to where you want it before you put the shaft in.
