I find the ice theory interesting, the tractor sat for 5 years and I did not change the trans or dif lube. There could have been a significat amount of condensation in there. The temps have been below freezing for weeks until we had that warm day on Thursday and when I git it first started it was covered in moisture. I had driven it about a mile before the lock-up, I wonder if a large chunk of ice could have come loose as the tractor warmed up?
I plan to check and drain everything now for signs of metal or teeth before I drive it again.
Jim: Thank you for the kind offer, I will let you know if I get stumped and need help. Also I have a new gas cap for the Cub, saw it mentioned on the forum and had it delivered. even before I got the tractor home. Haven't put it on yet because I just put gas in it last Thursday.

A JD 60 I had would bind once per revolution of flywheel. Oil pump failure followed by p.o. defeating low oil pressure fuel shut off ,creating dry bearings and worse. Ice could have caused the link made to shear under too much resistance break in that case, if oil pump gears were bound.
Be sure you have good oil pressure if you restart.

But this wouldn't result in the wheel binding once per revolution due to gear reduction at final drive. The problem is most certainly at the bull gear in the final or perhaps a bolt that worked out of a wheel weight snagging on something on the chassis.

Cripes...don't apply logic!
A foreign ,or loose object would be a suspect as mentioned , and as you mention again. A sure way to find out would be to inspect gear and pan and gear housing.
The same JD had a chewed up internal oil line to that met some gears,or something aggressive.
A crushed frozen mouse could jam a couple teeth too. Or any substance that could fit in teeth.
(Did on a rider mower once when a mouse was run through between the flywheel and starter gear....Filled in the gap of a couple teeth with mousepoxy and caused a bind each turn of the flywheel when those teeth met the starters teeth.)
No mouse expected in bull gear....unless pan was off in a previous life for a while.
Have had them around a brake though.

I can't wait till this weekend! You guys have me all fired up to take the final drive cover off and see what I have going on. It has been below 18 degrees since the wheel locked up so if there is any ice or frozen mice I will post pictures!

That must have been quite a ride! When one tire decelerates suddenly, the other accelerates and you could have quickly been thrown off or driven off the road into a solid object. Things really happen fast in third gear. You didn't report any injuries, so I am thankful that you were not seriously hurt. I'll bet that really puckered up the !
