Converting to Fast Hitch: Pro/Con

Postby Super A » Wed Jan 31, 2018 11:17 am

I have a Super A ("Old Ugly") that I converted to Fast Hitch a few years back, and I LOVE it. It's my garden tractor for me as well as my parents and it's so nice to plow, then click, back, click, and go with the disk or whatever implement I need. My Cub (The Paperweight) is a standard hitch, and though hooking up something like the plow is almost fun compared to the Super A (which isn't that hard) I've been sorta thinking about converting it to FH.

I'm here licking my wounds a little bit because I missed out on a complete Cub FH setup yesterday on one of the Cub Facebook sites, I thought I had it bought (for a FANTASTIC price) but by the end of the day the guy crawfished on me and sold it to another guy. For those of you who have Fast Hitch on your Cub, do you like it as much as I think I will like it on mine? If you converted, are you glad you did? Would you rather have FH or the standard drawbar hitch?

I have 2-3 FH implements that will swap between the Super A and a Cub, the only thing I would really need to buy is a FH Cub plow, and the correct lift arm for the left side of the universal mounting frame. I swapped Touch Control blocks some years back, and it has the arm for the helper spring. It would continue to plow, cultivate, maybe sickle mow once in a while.

We have a FH on both our Cubs (1 older style, 1 newer style) and don't regret it one bit. If you only need a plow and have some other implements already I don't think you would regret it either.

Plowing dirt with fast hitch vs non fast hitch- no contest, fast hitch gets my vote. Disc harrow-bush and bog discs that are used by both versions, not a big fan of either. I’ll continue to use my fast hitch version for food plots, but not gardening. For that I opt for the cub 23A on a non fast hitch with swinging drawbar. So I say have at least one with fast hitch and one without. That’s the way I roll :-)

I don't have either a fast hitch, nor any implements for it or the drawbar. So, if I could find a fast hitch for a good price, it would be the way to go. But, fast hitches cost a lot in itself, and then finding the fast hitch implements and the availability and the cost of those versus drawbar implements, makes me a bit hesitant. Of course, I would love to have the fast hitch and the FH implements, but......

Al,
All I've had is a FH Cub, but it is really easy to hook up the implements. Plow, disc harrow, rear grader blade, and a homemade carryall are what I have. Don't use them much or for very long so it's convenient that they are so easy to hook up.
For dirt plowing, the old style fast hitch depth adjuster handle is much faster than the crank but it does get in the way at times.

I have two Fast Hitch Cubs. The only way to go. One of mine is the early style depth control that Peter speaks of and the other is the late style. If you're going to use a moldboard plow, get the early style.

Vote for FH. They are handy moving trailers around the yard too. Just install ball reciever on there and lift up, move trailer, lower hitch, drive away. I have one on an original 1961 Cub and it is so handy for that.

I have one of each for the cubs and would prefer the FH if I had the implements. I have a FH plow and a small set of carryall forks and I welded a FH prong onto my 3 point grading blade so it can go either way. I am not about to fab or buy more prongs to make a boom or a big carry all box work or buy more FH implements so I am content to have both styles. Sounds like you are almost set up for FH, SuperA so go for it!!

One thing I did not realize before I owned a FH Cub is that you cannot set the rear wheels to their narrowest position (at least not on my '76 with 9.5 tires). I consider this a con.

I have the old style set up on one of my cubs...Its great...I plow with it, cultivate , york rake, can move trailers around and even put the flail mower on it although that is set up on another tractor...Bought it for 350 off the Vine and Bill H brought it to the NE Fest for me...That was and is a much appreciated gesture and its a great tractor set up....Bill also gave me some plowing tips etc...Win Win situation...I don't think you'll go wrong...Just use the old style especially for plowing, IMHO....Dave

Okay, I know this is probably a stupid question, but when in doubt, ask. Can you leave the drawbar on if you have a fast hitch installed? From all the pictures I'm seeing, it doesn't look like it would be possible, so I have to ask.

T-Mo, no you can’t leave the drawbar on but with the FH you don’t need it. You can pull a trailer etc with it.

The fast hitch has a drawbar (fixed or swinging) built right in!

You can also use your hitch adapters from your vehicle if you get a hitch like this one shown in this picture from Shane Nelson
