I’m trying to fix the changing system on my early cub.
It has a rusty external 3-terminal regulator, one lead connected to A terminal on the generator the other to the F terminal, the third connects the regulator to the ammeter. The regulator terminals are not marked and the unit is grounded to the tractor frame which I have checked. I inherited this electrical setup so I don’t know any past history or if it ever worked.
When I start the tractor, my (new) ammeter needle doesn’t move, it remains in the center position. When running, the battery voltage drops from about 6.4 volts to about 6.0 volts. Rotating the 4-position dash switch has no effect. When running the voltage measured from either regulator terminals A and F to ground is about a volt. I don’t currently have a good multimeter (a nice Fluke is on order) so I’m not real confident in the accuracy of these low regulator voltage measurements.
I have flashed the generator, momentarily touching the BATT and GEN terminals. I also tested my new ammeter by momentarily connecting in series with the battery and it deflects to max discharge and then returns to center.
What do you reccommend to do next?
Thank you for your assistance!

Re: Need Help with generator/regulator
I am assuming the charging system worked at one time and you did not switch those unmarked regulator terminals. Did you get a spark when you polarized the generator? The voltage from the "F" terminal to ground should be zero unless the generator is done charging the battery. Based on the battery voltage measurement, the field should have been grounded by the regulator and the field voltage to ground should be zero. You can ground the "F" terminal on the generator while measuring the battery voltage with the engine running. If the voltage increases the look at the regulator or associated wiring. Someone will post a flow chart to make things easier but generators are actuary very reliable, old regulators tend to have corroded points.

Re: Need Help with generator/regulator
Hi,
I guess you mean you are working on the 1947 Cub, it shows by your name.
A 1947 Cub originally had a Cutout, or Relay, IH called it on top of the generator. They are not a voltage regulator, you have to select the High or Low charge rate, using the 4 position switch. IH changed to the voltage regulator during 1950, and they are at the side of the gen, on a bracket. Your 1956 LoBoy would have had one originally.
Below are pics from the 1950 Cub owner's manual, they show the electrical system as it originally was on a 1947 Cub. The pics are a little clearer than the 1947 manual that is in the group of manuals I use.

Below is the whole 1947 Cub owner's manual. It has much info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. It has pics of how the Cub originally was also. The experts on here recommend that everyone with a Cub should read it.

Below is the Flow Chart for the Relay system, member tst uses this to help diagnose the system.

Re: Need Help with generator/regulator
Pulled the cover off the voltage regulator and it was badly rusted so for sure not working. Measured the voltage on the generator terminal A with the field terminal grounded and was reading 0.1 volts with the throttle advanced. Plan to pull the hood and address the generator issue next.

Re: Need Help with generator/regulator
Tim as you can see for the flowchart 60% of the paths lead to the regulator. Personally, I have 0 faith in the 6-volt regulars currently available US made or import.
I have Clover solid state voltage regulators inside the Delco regulator body in two 6 volt positive ground cubs and have been very happy viewtopic.php?f=1&t=94792&hilit=clover
If you do have a cut out relay and not a voltage regulator Brillman sells an electronic one https://brillman.com/product/universal- ... out-relay/

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
