Also, What is the cost difference between the OEM and one you can get off the shelf somewhere?

Here it is, it's not as many as you'd think.

LEBANON-39
CAMERON-47
DALLAS-8
MOUNTVILLE-23
SAN LEANDRO-1
PORTLAND-1

I ask him was this all of Case/IH or just his company stores, he said this is all Case/IH depots, none of their stores stock that seal.

My local auto parts store has a National 417350 for $29.99 but it's steel cased. Messick's original was $28.98 with $11.18 shipping.

Did you ask Motion Industries about that Harwal 3.000x3.875x.375 seal. I'm not sure if a person would really need the double lip if they had their covers in place. That outer lip is only for dust. If the seals are the same price, single lip and double, no brainer.

Just got off the phone with Motion and the closest Harwal they have is 3.000" bore X 3.756" O.D. X .437" thick and it's not rubber cased and cost is $26.46 When ask was it single lip or double lip he said it is multi lip.

Good find on the National seals. If they are fresh, i.e. not old NOS seals, then there is no reason to look for the Harwal seals since you have what you need. I called Harwal yesterday and they have the seals, still being made, spoke with Ashleigh at the SC location. You can call her and she will give you your local distributor's names and phone numbers. I called my local Motion Industries and they can get the seals. I am not sure what is going on with your local Motion Industries but the seals are still made and Motion Industries is a distributor.

Did they give you a price on the Harwal seal? I called Motion Industries in Kernersville N.C. and they told me what I put here. I don't know why they telling us something different.

Here's a good read on seal shelf life. http://www.isca.com.au/index.php/client ... shelf-life

Motion industries would not have a big stock of that seal, likely a stock level of zero. They will take your money, keep some of it, send the rest to Harwal, and Harwal will drop ship to you. The price years ago, maybe 5 years, was around $10. I bought 2 to try them and when they seemed to be good then I ordered 8 more. I kept some for myself but my plan was to have forum members try the seal and give feedback. I sent some seals to the volunteers but never got any feedback. But I know I would not have paid $26 apiece just to sent to others so I think my memory of around $10 is close.
Your local Motion Industries may be adding on for their Christmas party fund or the price may have increased over the past few years. If you still want to check on the Harwal seal then call the company and Ashleigh will give you some other local suppliers.

If the National seal is in good shape then I would just use that seal. Seems like there is a good supply but the cost is high.

Almost ready to split the tractor. Need to make some front wedges first.

I wittled out some axle wedges from some UHMW we had, they work. I've always used a piece of wood sawed into a wedge but thought I'd make something a little better for this project. I put a .200" taper on these and they are tight. Rick, I like your wedges better with the bolts for security :D

Here's Walt's leaky seal, someone has obviously been in here before with the blue Permatex showing. I did put a clutch in this a few years ago but didn't touch the retainer or the seal.

Someone put a CR 29887 in Walt’s R1 retainer. It’s obviously leaking but I can’t push it out by hand.

Set the prototype in position. I may have to counterbore the holes, we’ll see.
