How many types of distributors are on a cub. I have an IH distributor. The cap points toward the rear of the tractor. Is there only one model IH distributor?
The Delco distributor has the cap pointing up.
I am trying to order a Pertronix ignition system and the supplier wants to know which distributor I have.

Re: Cub distributor
If you are still 6 volts you may not be happy with the pertronics. Some people have done great. I personally could not get it to work. I love the 12v version but my 6 volts culbs are all points. I may give it a try again this summer.
You need very close to 6 volts (5.5v?) at the coil to get it to work The 12-volt units will work at 8-9 volts I think. So if your 6 volt battery and charging systems and connections are not in excellent condition you may not get it to work.

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Re: Cub distributor
My next points change I a putting in the Velleman electronic ignition, less than $30.00, fun to build and keeps your tractor stock, except or a circuit board and can be put back to original very quickly. I have one on my 66 Mercedes 230Sl, it made a noticeable improvement.
I have read too many stories of failures and problems with the Petronix. As posted in another thread, you also need resistor plug wires with your Petronix, also, just my feeling, wire core wires last longer and give better spark than carbon core resistor wires.
Keep your points and just make them a low amperage switch and they will last about 3 times as long and your tractor will run great. My only decision would be where to mount the circuit board. I was thinking of up by the generator out of site in case.
The Velleman is a circuit board that requires soldering and basic schematic skills and can be built for 6v pos. Ground.

Re: Cub distributor
Pertronix is a points replacer not a points saver style such as the vellman system. I have used the basic ignitor version for years with no problems using solid core plug wires. For the more advanced ignitor II module you may need to use resistor plug wires. The original ignitor module is more than enough for a cub engine.

Re: Cub distributor
Both my 6V Cubs and my 12V Cub all use the pertonix ignition modules. Look stock the way installed them and haven’t had a dead plug in several years. Love them!

Re: Cub distributor
Mine has been trouble free and I have carbon core resistor wires. I've left my ignition switch on a couple times accidentally and it caused no harm. I sometimes shut off the fuel while running to drain carb and forget to push in the ignition switch.
