Fuel Shut Off Lever

Postby ajhbike » Sun Mar 04, 2018 8:26 pm

I have read on this forum about how to repair the paciking for the fuel bowl shut off if there is leaking...cotton string? Can you point out where I would wind the string and how much to use? Thanks John

If it's like most hand operated valves, that nut at the bottom in the pic would be the packing gland nut. the string would go under it, around the stem.

Have you tried to tighten the packing nut? If you over tighten it, you won't be able to turn the stem, but there's usually a happy medium where the leak stops and you can still turn the valve stem.

Nah, it's not leaking oil. It's just marking it's territory.

I prefer dental floss for the packing string. I start with about 4 wraps, sometimes have to add a little more.

That looks like one of the original back seating valves. Packing isn't that critical. Open it all the way and it shouldn't leak.

What about the stuff they sell in the plumbing dept. of Lowes? I think this is what I mean:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Danco-0-09-Graphite-Bonnet-Packing/1085895
I actually bought some, but haven't used it yet. Has anyone any info on it?

Can't tell from the picture but it looks like the diameter is too large to fit inside the packing nut.

Not worried about the fuel leaking out by the bowl. The problem is that it doesn't shut off flow to the carb.

You may have some crud that keeps the seat from sealing. I'd disassemble, spray with carb cleaner and maybe twist a piece of fine Scotch pad in the seat ends until they are nice and shiny.

I added this quick open valve to one that would not stop the fuel flow: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=93299

What Stan said, put a ball valve on the sediment bowl.

Edit after Ajhbike posted. I put ball valves on all my machines when I work on them. Positive open and shut off.

I decided to go with the ball valves when I opened up the shop one morning. Found one tractor had leaked gallons of fuel on the floor over night.

Okay, thanks...will rely on auxiliary shutoff. Was thinking that wrapping some floss to the left or the right of one of the lever bulges would do the trick.

I have polished the seat in the sediment bowl with a dremel tool with a fine abrasive paste. Then I polished the valve stem portion on a buffing wheel. That seems to have done the trick for me.
