New Guy from Michigan
Hello Everyone!
New Guy here, and first off I want to say that there seems to be a lot of smart people here....or you've done a good job of foolin' me!
I used to have a IHC "A" model years ago....had the plow, cultivators, wheels weights, vacum lift and such. Of course (like a fool) I sold it off, but I've always had a soft spot for "little" IHCs. I still like "older" machinery and I currently run a Ferguson TO-30 with an ancient Ford 5' rotary mower for brush hoggin' and a '84 Simplicity 6200 lawn tractor for the lawn mowing chores along with the wife's older Troy Built tractor.
At a garage sale last summer there was a Cub Cadet Lo-Boy 154 sitting in a guy's front yard with no fenders and missing some other sheet metal. I was looking at it and this fellow comes over and asks "Wana hear it run?". I said sure and he cranks it over and it catches and it just sits there and purrs. Well, I have to have it.......I run around and find the wife and drag her over to the Cub. She thinks it's cute but does it have all the parts ? The fellow takes me into his garage and starts going through piles and boxes. Okay, let's see....new grill in the box, new dashboard, new steering wheel, new throttle cable, paint, all the decals, original seatpan (rough), homemade 7' front blade, 60" mower deck (kinda rough), fenders and a custom, highback seat with arms and umpteen different adjustments. Oh, and a box with a gazillon different fasteners in it.
Okay, short story long....I took it home! After I got it unloaded and took inventory I found quite a few things had been "boogered up". For some strange reason, someone cut the centers out of the fenders and also cut "access?" holes in the transmission tunnel and rear cover and was missing the left side cover over the PTO clutch pullies. BUT the electrics are good, the hydraulics work, transmission is good and the C-60 runs like a champ!
I just retired last December and the Lo-Boy is now going to be my "first" restoration project. I look forward to sharing experiences with all of you and to "lean" on you guys for help from time to time.
Thanks for letting me "bend" you ears...I'll shut up now! Oh, since you were so nice to listen to my ratchet jawin' here's some pictures!

Mike:
Nice story. Glad to see that you have a better half willing to indulge a little in your passions as well. That 154 will be some fun to restore. With that in mind, there have been some additions to Rudi's Farmall Cub Manual Server that will interest you. Please enjoy and well, the Welcome Wagon shall say the rest................
First, to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met
Ok, so here is the spiel :
I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub. One of the other projects we have been working on and it will be a continuing effort is the How To Article Archive. This the the place to go to get all the quick links to some very good articles written by many members of the forum on solving some of the problems we encounter as we repair, maintain and up-grade our Cubs. Keep looking for this to grow.
Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These pages are intended to complement our Official FarmallCub.com Website Sponsors:
I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.
IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.
In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.
Oh, and while the program still lasts.. you might want to check the Announcement: Navistar Free Gas Cap Offer - On-Line Form thread at the top of the Cub Forum and send away for the new style safety cap before that program runs out as well.
I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, to the Cub Family

It reclines, declines and inclines! I'm in Barry County, southwest lower Mich - closest city of any size would be Battle Creek.

Great story Mike! Welcome aboard!

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks Mac! I think I've found some good fenders for it so my parts quest is starting off well. I still need to find the lift brackets and and guide wheels for the 60" deck.... of course the thrill is in the chase, right?

Welcome Mike, That's a fine looking 154. Check with the vendors listed here for some of those parts you may need, I'm sure they would be glad to help, Ralph usually has some stuff for those numbered cubs.
Great to have you on board.

I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.
