I have been reading in this forum, and thought I would post a little about myself. I worked in my Uncle's IH shop as a mechanic when I was in high school and finally got my first tractor about ten years ago. Its an early cub, (mesh grille) and it came with a rear cutivator, cordwood saw, snowplow, and a single bottom plow. I bought it for $100. Unfortunately, the last owner removed the head and left the tractor in his yard for 5 years before I got to it. The engine was seized and the tractor was mostly dissassembled. Hopefully what I learned from my uncle will pay off. I finally started working on it about a year ago, and hopefully will have it running soon. My little farm sure could use some mechanical power.
Phil. welcome to the board. You got a great deal on your cub, even if the engine is beyond salvaging. You will fins this to be a great bunch of guys, and as to parts, The sellers listed at the bottom of each page are both contributing members as well as great people to do buisness with. Also don't forget your locla dealer, you will be amazed at how many parts are still available new.

Welcome aboard! Ralph or one of the site sponsors can set you up with an engine pretty inexpensively if you just want to replace it and forget it. I have seen engines on Ralph's site for around $400 - 500, but you have to provide things like the carb, generator, manifold, starter, etc...pretty much everything that "hangs off of the motor itself"
A $100.00 cub is a GOOD DEAL no matter WHAT is wrong with it...

Ralph can sell you a complete running engine with all the parts and pieces hanging on it just not for 400-500. Most people already have good carbs, clutches, generators, etc. Ralph has everything you need and is one fantastic guy to deal with

Hopefully some of this will be useful. Mike had a good point. Ralph is probably your best bet for a new mill, unless of course you have the equipment and the skills to redo it. Ralph is real good and who knows .. there should be a way to get it to you inexpensively to boot..
Welcome, and I can tell you this for sure.. I have learned a ton of stuff on how to fix and work on these Cubs.. and I am not exactly a mechanic nor an electrical type.. The guys on the forum are really helpful and will help you with any of your questions.. Count on it Plus you are going to have a lot of fun doing it
Ok, so here is the spiel :
I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub. One of the other projects we have been working on and it will be a continuing effort is the How To Work on Your Cub - Maintenance Tips and Techniques. This the the place to go to get all the quick links to some very good articles written by many members of the forum on solving some of the problems we encounter as we repair, maintain and up-grade our Cubs. Keep looking for this to grow.
Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better if you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.
IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.
In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

Phil, welcome to the Forum. Good deal on that Cub. Even if the engine is real bad, you still have a good foundation to build from. I'm sure you could find an engine to transplant in it's place from one of our sponsors.
