Just about a year ago I bought a 1953 Cub from a guy who had it parked in a tire store parking lot with a for sale sign on it. I had been considering buying a tractor and always liked the Cub because it is just the perfect size for my needs. We live on one acre of land that was formerly part of a pear orchard. Five years ago it was just a new house and bare ground. It takes a lot of work to turn this blank canvas into what we wanted. We hired the neighbor across the road to do some tractor work for us, but usually he's too busy in his 80 acre apple orchard to work us into his schedule. Gradually we got the area around the house set up into a yard and gardens. My wife is a quite the gardener and has about 300 varieties of daffodils planted. It was quite an effort to get this done with just an old Troy-Bilt rototiller and hand tools. The unplanted area of our place grew thick with weeds and it would take many days to whack them down by hand. The Cub made it possible to make our place into what we wanted. The guy who sold me the Cub added in a Cub 22 mower and parts of a 144 cultivator. Right away I used the mower to whack down about a half acre of weeds in the first afternoon. When you buy a 54 year old tractor you have to expect some things are going to need fixing. Most of it was minor stuff. As I used the Cub I discovered some "farmer fixes" from the past 50+ years that needed attention. I've been visiting the forum for about 6 months and finally signed up a few months ago. I was too busy to post anything, but had good intentions. Then the Cub's clutch release bearing began to fail and I had a local guy with a one man farm shop take care of that. He told me it would take about 2 weeks, but it turned out to be 3 1/2 weeks. Spring time in an agricultural area is not the best time to get tractor repairs done. At the same time I had computer problems and it went into the shop too. So there I was, both Cubless and computerless for almost a month. I had terrible withdrawal symptoms. Now they're both back in service and I'm trying to catch up on things that need to be done. As soon as the Cub came home I plowed up about a quarter acre of ground and used the 23A disc that I bought this winter from a local classified ad. My wife has the planting bug. Then we went to a nearby dairy and picked up several trailer loads of composted manure to fertilize the newly prepared ground before planting. Not having a manure spreader, we improvised. I drove the Cub and my wife tossed manure out of the trailer as we went. Crude, but effective. Now we're ready to plant if the weather cooperates. A week ago it was 80 degrees, but this morning it was 26 as a new cold spell moved in. The cherry and apple orchards are in bloom and the growers are running their wind machines and orchard heaters at night to save their crops. This story has grown quite long, but I want to say how much I appreciate this group and all of the good knowledge I've picked up since becoming a Cub owner. I'm also really appreciating what a fine piece of machinery a Cub is. There's nothing on the market than can take its place.

Welcome to the family and I enjoyed your post a lot. Very nice when both you and your bride get involved and share in the enjoyment of gardening and in completing your vision/dream.
