Just registered being as I just bought ten acres in the sticks with a '52 cub to go along with it. Great little tractors! This thing had been sitting there neglected for 3 or 4 years. Was able to squeeze out about a gallon of water (condensation?) through the separator bowl until nice old yellow fuel showed up. Threw my truck battery in, gave it a choke and starter spin and she fired up and ran for about 10 seconds. Cleaned the tank, put in fresh fuel and oil, greased her up, and whalah! Was cuttin' grass with her that day. Been hooked ever since. She's in need of a rear main seal and front end bushings though. But otherwise she's a keeper! 800 bucks with the belly mower-not a bad deal imho!
Thanks for all the info within,
I'll keep y'all posted.

52Cublover,

Welcome to the Forum! It sounds like you have a good find there. :big afro:

Congratulations on getting it going, glad you didn't have any oil problems, usually one sitting that long would require priming the oil pump.

You will find a wealth of information and help here on this forum, take some time to surf around and get familiar with it and you will be well ahead of the game when you have issues to address.

TM Tractor is a good source for new parts, Ralphs for used, (both site sponsors) should you need any.

On the rear seal, I suggest you contact Phil Lenke viewtopic.php?f=28&t=51835 it looks like you still have time to order one (until the end of May). Search "retainer" in the regular Cub Forum and you will see why this is recommended.

Welcome aboard and good luck,

Ok, on this rear seal issue, is it an OD on the new seals vs. the ID of the old seal retainer? And if so, can't someone make a seal with the old dimensions? I know, this probably needs to go to another post topic, but just asking :>

That is pretty much the issue.
From another post:
It is recommended to use a "reworked" seal / retainer set up, it can be purchased from Phil Lenke ( viewtopic.php?f=28&t=51835 ). The new IH seals sold now don't fit properly and a common complaint is they leak, so the "reworked" set up is the best route.

I am not aware of someone making just a seal with a slightly larger OD, the ones Phil reworks are larger seals, but the retainer is milled to fit it, also checks the retainer to be true and straight and fixes any thread issues that may be there on the three oil pan bolts that go into the retainer (those bolts are hardest ones to put in and sometimes get stripped). The retainer has the seal pressed in and ready to install. You just need to order the gasket for it and you are ready to roll! :big afro:

Good luck,

Welcome to the forum! David has explained the rear seal issue very well. I've experienced the seal issue several times and the re-worked retainer from Phil is, by far, the best solution. He does very nice work!
