Farmall Cub

though growing up on a small family orchard i'm a city boy, loved these little tractors all my life and vowed to find one to bring back to life. serendiptiously a '51 hi-crop came up on the local craig's at the exact same hour and the exact same price as a concours honda ct90 i restored sold. that's a sign if i ever saw one. not to mention coming out way ahead weight wise.

the cub runs but it needs some tlc. being a california cub its probably in better shape than most, but even so the short while i've had it i've learned all about the rust mushrooms that 60 year old nuts and bolts become. my manuals came today so i can start on the basics... gaskets, fluids and see where i'm at with all the mechanicals before i tear down for any major repairs and final finishes.

i do have one question and that's the shape of the unobtanium new seat support tube (part # 351 883 R11). pix attached of mine...is that the shape they are supposed to be? i couldn't find any close-ups in the photo sections.

anyway, thanks for letting me in here. this is a fabulous resource with, from lurking the last couple weeks, some great people participating. almost every single question that has cropped up i've found myriad answers to with a couple clicks of the mouse. it's amazing how much information is archived here, the wisdom and knowledge amassed is incredible. and the site sponsors have been wonderful, shipping on time and honest to a fault.

Welcome, like Bill said your seat post is fine and not rusted out as they usually are. There's a tool box that fits in the front covering the mounting section. Water usually lays in there and causes problems down the road.

Welcome. Those shiny bolts holding your seat down are not normal. I say that because most are severely rusted in place and present a major challenge to remove. These new bolts are a good sign that maybe the previous owner has already done some restoration work. Note that the seat bracket has an extra hole which allows you to move the bracket back if you would like more room on the operator platform.

the new bolts are mine...the rust mushrooms those replaced are what i had the joy of removing. and those hourglass bends in the gussets are normal?
the toolbox when and if i find one will indeed cover it up, i was just curious.

one last newbie question and i'll slide back into lurk mode: where do you folks go for basic parts...oil filters, gaskets, seals, belts, carb rebuild kit, etc....tm?

Yes, TM is a good source for about anything. You can also ask and we'll help you find things through your local parts store, such as seals, bearings, filters and such.
Ralph's web site on the home page is a good place to find your tool box.

Nope the bracket is not supposed to be distorted quite like that. There is a bit of a bend in the side walls of the bracket though.



This is what the bracket normally looks like. Remember these are usually between 50 and 60 years old.. sooooo there is bound to be some distortion.

Welcome to the forum. Don't go back to lurking, please. Your tractor looks to be a High-Wide, a special iteration of the Cub.

For basic parts like oil filters and oil, I usually start with Autozone, then check with Napa. They both have OEM parts cross references. If you need a carb kit, definitely go to TM - cheap aftermarket carb kits don't work. Also, if you are going to do a tune-up, the TM "kit" is about the same price as an new cap from Napa.

This fourm is nothing but a learning experience.
Even more so if you own a Cub. Put your questions
on the fourm. Answers generally are returned before
you can complete the question. Well almost.

The smaller front bolt in your seat post is in a hole originally intended for the bolt mounting the tool box. That bolt, as best I remember is 3/8-24, NF thread. Those original threads in that hole may be ruined.
