Farmall Cub

Hi all. I recently purchased a 1948 Farmall Cub that was restored by my brother's father-in-law before he passed away, a couple of months ago. The tractor seems to be in great condition and it purrs when I've been able to get it cranked. I'm having an issue cranking it and keeping it running but I already love it. It appears that the carburetor is not pulling enough fuel. I've got a carburetor rebuild kit that came with the purchase. I'm hoping to find an article somewhere on how to rebuild it.

I am looking forward to being a part of this forum and participating as I learn more about these great tractors. I love growing vegetables and gardening and canning take me back to life on my grandfather's farm as a kid. Thanks to those that created this great forum.

A couple of tips on carbs. By far the most common issue is dirt. Before you try to rebuild it, try a few things. Fuel delivery can be checked at several points. Remove the fuel line at the carb and confirm that the tank and strainer are not restricted. The plug at the bottom of the bowl will confirm the function of the float and fuel control needle and seat. If you have a steady stream here then the jet is dirty.
The jet is accessed by removing the brass nut on the side and pulling out the jet. Clean it with air or a SOFT copper wire, like a telephone wire strand. This solves a large percentage of carb problems and it is easy. Far too many carbs are rebuilt resulting in even more trouble.

Next, check your kit. If it is made by TISCO, forget about it. Even the experts struggle to get these parts to work properly. See the link to TM Tractor below for a source of quality parts that work.

IF you dig into the carb, the top needs to be lifted straight up or the long idle tube will snap. Then you need more parts, and perhaps a 4-48 tap.
Next, the tops are usually warped. They are not bad to straighten if you have a jig. A bit of bending and twisting is involved and a kiss from a file. Could be intimidating without guidance. The CBok link above has lots of tips on service but don't be in a hurry to take it apart.

Thank you all very much for the warm welcome and the carb tips! That is some great information to get me started. Now to dig in and figure out how to add a photo in a post. I uploaded some pictures of my Cub in the gallery.

Welcome to the forum from another Carolina native. Many members on the forum from NC, just can't get get them all to stand up and be counted at one time, LOL. I'm from Kannapolis, near Charlotte, and have relatives in Raleigh.
