New cub guy from Alabama

Postby drewg » Sun Dec 20, 2015 3:50 pm

Hello.
My name is Drew Gardner, I'm from Guntersville Alabama. I just recently purchased a 1956 Cub with a sickle bar mower, 1 pt hitch moldboard plow, 1 pt hitch disc, and some cultivator parts. The little fella hasn't ran in 6 years, but the engine is free. It appears to be in good shape, and fairly original. Still using the 6 volt electrical system. Me and a few friends have hosted lgt plow days for 6 years here in Alabama. I hope to get it going in time for our spring plow day. I would appreciate any advice you guys can give.
Thanks
Drew

Prime the oil pump before trying to start, might not be a bad idea to change it too. After you get it running good change it again. Also change trans and final drive fluids. If you have to work on hydraulics, flush and change that also. Very small amount of grease in distributor and top off oil in fan hub. Our first cub was a '56. Oh, and few squirts of cheap (melts easy) grease to the throw out bearing.

Congrats on your new cub and welcome to the FORUM. Suggest you download the Owners Manual from the links at the top of this page. You will find a complete lube information list and other valuable information. The Blue Ribbon Service Manuals are also found there and a great source of information. Enjoy your cub. Thanks for the quick reply. Do you guys recommend pouring any lubricant in the spark plug holes and rotating the engine after it has set? If so, what do you use?

I like to use a penetrating lubricant like PB BLASTER or KROL to lube the cylinders and rings. If you have sticking valves it will also help if you work through the spark plug hole and spray some on the valves when they are open so it can run down the stem into the compartment where you set the valve lash. A compression test will usually reveal a stuck valve. Assuming you have an IH carb, a word of caution: if you decide to open up the carb, be very careful to pull it straight apart so as not to break the idle tube jet between the upper and lower half of the carb. Welcome to the forum from Arkansas. From the sound of it you will have it going before plow days. Good luck and enjoy your cub.

If you haven't done too much to your new-to-you Cub, here's a listing in the How To section of typical things to do when you first bring a Cub home:

Again, welcome! Post some pics if you can (help doing that is also found in the How To Forum). Use the search feature, but ask any specific questions you need answered.

Hey guys. I worked on it a little today, after letting it soak, I put a good 6 volt battery on it, primed my oil pump, and turned to over. It wasn't firing, so I cleaned the points the cured the firing problem, and made for a good chuckle from the guys at work. Still no start though. My carb seems to be leaking, so I will probably get a new carb kit, and some new plugs, and hope for the best.
Thanks Drew

Plugs firing + fuel + correct timing it should run at least briefly. If not, and since it set for 6 years check the valves for operation and seating by removing the inspection plate behind the carb and have a look. Stan

You may not need a kit, just cleaning. Pull carb halves STRAIGHT apart so as not to break the idle tube. Stay away from cheap kits (TSC). There is a very good how to on here, look up top.

IT LIVES!!!
Its running again. Talk about a good early Christmas present. The idle tube in the carb was broken by the previous owner. So I opted for a fresh rebuilt IH carb with a .095 jet like the 70 model cubs. I also put a new set of plugs in it. The L22 sickle bar mower works smooth too. I would like to start a restore thread on this little fella. I'm looking forward to making it new again.

Keep the carb. Broken idle tubes are easily removed and replaced.

Just wanted to do a quick update on my cub. I recently went to a plow day here in north Alabama, and got to work it a little, which is what it needed. Ill post some links to the YouTube videos of me plowing with it. It was alot of fun. I need to find a coulter for my C194 plow. I have recently replaced the steering shaft seal, and changed the oil in the steering gear box, and cleaned the vent hole in the fill plug. I am going to take it to 2 shows in the next 2 weeks, then after that, I plan to tear it down and start restoring it. I hope to keep you guys updated here on the forum, and hope get your advice on it. I may have lots of questions so please be patient with me.
Thanks
Drew
