53 not charging,,my worst subject

Postby razerface » Sun Nov 27, 2016 8:17 pm

I can deal with grease and stuck bolts,,,but i am not good at electric stuff. I put my meter on the battery and it read 6.10v,,,then started tractor and it reads 5.98-6.0v,,,so i think it does not charge. I polerized it with wire from bat to gen, but it did not help.

Where do i start? Take gen off and tear it apart? Do more tests? I am slow on this electric stuff, but i have to fix it.

No charge can be very aggravating, the "flow chart" is very helpful to detect a problem. I can't tell you how important a CLEAN and TIGHT connection is to your charging. Clean contact points are not only the ends of wires but mounting surfaces as well, like starter to torque tube, generator mount etc..
Good luck....you'll get it, and if ya don't.....a battery maintainer may be in your future.
Bruce.

I stole this from a post on 'yesterdays tractors', but it was helpful while running down my charging issues on my Farmall H which has a virtually identical charging system:
Disconnect the "F" terminal, then remove the belt and jump the battery and "A" terminals together. The generator shold spin like a motor. If it doesn't, make sure the battery terminal on the regulator has battery voltage to it. While you have it motoring, ground the "F" terminal. The generator should slow down but continue to motor. If the generator does all of that, it's OK.

In my case, it turns out that the box that the rotary switch is in wasn't grounded well enough. I added an aux ground wire (along with rewiring the rest of the tractor due to crumbling original wiring) and all is well now.

Here is the rest of the post in case it is helpful but I am sure you can find the same information on here with a little searching:

Hi,
You didn't say if the ammeter shows charge, or no charge when the engine is running above idle speed.
I guess you are using the flow chart, if the problem is the voltage regulator, sometimes they can be fixed by filing the points inside them.
The points can get burned, and the reg quits working. There are 2 sets of points in the 6 volt voltage regulator. If you file them, clean them with a clean rag between them after filing them. :)

If it is the regulator and you want to stay 6 volts I suggest you consider a solid state regulator viewtopic.php?f=1&t=94792
