1970 IH 140 Restoration

Postby Shane Nelson » Thu Apr 19, 2018 7:10 am

Today is the day, going to pick up the 1970 IH 140. It's a 1 owner, bought it from a good friend who's dad bought it new. Plans are fix it right and repaint it and keep it. Not sure what needs fixing other than what I can tell from the outside. Haven't heard it run yet and if it needs rebuilding it will get it. My wife loved the man who bought it to death and when he passed away last year the last thing he told my wife laying in the hospital bed was "your beautiful", he was 90. This one's for you Norman :D

Went and shook the sheds out Tuesday and gathered all the extras. Has fertilize, left and right sides but only one hopper with original lid, full set of cultivators, front and rear wheel weights, J bar, crooked bar, original battery box lid was laying on a shelf behind the tractor, PTO shield was laying beside battery lid, 10 cultivator shanks, 6 clamps and 4 hillers.

Fixed the first thing. The hole in the pull bar extension AKA: trailer hitch was wollered out. Welded it and re-drilled it. Have one on the Cub that looks like it's never been used so used it to get the right hole size and location. It's 13/16" if anyone's wondering.

If I had a dollar for every tobacco trailer this hitch pulled I could probably pay for the tractor and have some left over.

Just got home with it, was 3 miles from the house. First time it’s been moved in about 10 years. His son climbed on it and drove it up on the trailer as I winched it.

My wife didn’t know the kids and I went and got this tractor today, she was at work and just got home not long ago. I said come here I want to show you something so I grabbed the flashlight and we went out in the yard. She’s not an emotional woman, she says I cry enough for the both of us. I tell her Jesus wept, men do it. Anyways she started tearing up and said “it’s my favorite”. Guess it’s a keeper for sure.

Sounds like your wife is a 'keeper' also. It is great that you were able to get something that is so meaningful to her.

She is Bill. We came in the house and she grabbed me and hugged me and said “thank you”. I said for what, she said “for everything”. The Cub I sold so we could buy this 140 my dad gave me. Didn’t have room to bring another tractor home and didn’t have the funds either. I have a 1949 John Deere A my Dad gave me 20 years ago, I wouldn’t sell it for anything. The Cub meant a lot but making my wife happy meant more. I told Dad the other morning I had to sell the Cub he gave me to buy a 140, he said without hesitation “you’ll like the 140 more”. He gets it. I told him I either had to sell it or the other Cub I got from my brother and I have too much in it to sell it.

Found this in the tool box under the seat, a brand new wedge for the crooked bar. I know they break sometimes. I figured he took it out and put it there so it wouldn't get lost. Nope, there's a good one in the crooked bar with the clamp.
