A tie rod ends

Postby Wilbilly » Sun Aug 05, 2018 9:18 pm

Hello all, if any of yall remember little while back I got my first A. Well I ended up buying another one for parts, and getting most of the bits and peaces I needed. But I'm having trouble with my tie rod ends in the middle . I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks on keeping them in. It looks like someone has welded on it trying to build it up, it looks like either it wore the weld off already or it done more harm than good. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Wil

On my Cub LoBoy, the tie rod attaching from the bottom fell out because the hole in the receiver plate was worn to the point the ball slipped through the hole. I made a small plate from scrap 1/4 inch stock about the same size of that plate, cut a gap in it with a hacksaw, heated it hot enough to bend it open so that it would slip over the tie rod below the ball, then while still hot enough to bend, flattened back to the original shape. Had to use longer capscrews/nuts to hold it all together and it worked well. You could tack weld the hacksaw cut back together if needed but I didn't. The two bolts keeps it from spreading back out. The extra plate is hard to see in the second picture, it's on the bottom.

Download the Parts Manual for your tractor (if you don't already have it). It has an exploded view of the front end showing all the parts and how they go together. Manuals are located via "Quick Links" in the upper left corner of your screen. Hit that and a pull-down appears where you'll find "PDF Manuals". Through that link, you'll be able to download find the Parts Manual for an A and B.

I'm not sure of what to call it. But this is the problem area.

You might double check that you have both the seats in that arm: #27 & 28 below:
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Super%20A%20-%20Super%20AV/TC-39B%20Parts%20Catalog/Page%20178.jpg
The tie rod ends do not look centered, so one of the seats may be missing. You tighten up the cavity that holds the tie rod ends by screwing in the "Adjusting Seat", #29:

Just don't make them too tight...they need to be free to move.

Would it be possible to get the parts off a 140 to swap it over to regular automobile style tie rod ends?

But do you have the center one, #28? It is concave on both sides, and separates the two ends. #27 is flat on the outside and concave on the inside, and #29 is also concave on the inside, with the screw slot on the outside. These 3 pieces cup around the 2 ball ends, and are what keep them from falling out.

It seams like a certain spot is where it pops out when you turn left. Idk what it all about. It seams to me that the balls are more oval than round know.

The ball ends are probably worn if they are oval shaped. You can purchase replacement balls and have them welded on. I think McMaster Carr has them.

I fooled with it aging last night and got it a little better shape. Something must of not been seated in there good bc now it seams tight, but everything is all the way over over toward the right( standing at front of tractor) as far as it can go.
Who is it that sells the new ball ends? Are they on here? And how can you reach them?

Thanks, Wil

I think Stan was referring to buying ball bearings of the correct diameter and welding them on the ends. McMaster-Carr is the company to google and search for them.

Yeah, thanks Bob. Seems like my fingers and my brain gets out of sync but I've got a good excuse (birthdays disease, CRIS).
