Is it a starter, or a horn?

When I pull the starter rod on the Super A, the starter kicks in and makes a heck of a racket. It sounds like an OOOGAAH horn.

I think the engine is spinning because the front fan is turning, but it makes a heck of a clatter. New starters for these things are pretty expensive! Over $200 by the look of things. Once I get if off of there what should I do, inspect the starter gear and the flywheel for wear or missing teeth, and if they look OK have a go at the inside of the starter?

I have to pull the lever really hard, too, so I'm assuming I need a new switch. Also, the tractor just up and dies at random times - I think it has a short somewhere in the wiring. I ordered a new service manual for all the Farmalls, so I'm hoping that will tell me more about rewiring it!

Hey Allen...sounds like you should take the starter off and look at the gears (they're probably worn down or missing some).

At any rate...Find a good, local electrical shop that rebuilds starters, and have yours rebuilt (it's a lot cheaper than a NEW one...OUCH! )
