I have a steering box that is leaking a small amount of oil from between the two halves. My question is, can a person replace the seal just by splitting the halves, without taking the entire steering box off the tractor?

Yes. Pull the pitman arm from the sector shaft, pull the axle pin and drop the axle out, then drop the lower half of the steering box.

I have sealed dirtbike engine/trans cases that leaked on the split seam with Pro Seal silicone in the black tube. I drained the trans oil and used brake clean to make sure the area is free from oil and dirt and then i applied the silicone on the outside over the seam. Then i put an outside spotlite lamp on it for heat overnite and the next day I filled the trans with gear oil and it had no leak and it never leaked again.

Sorry for not getting back to you all any sooner. Got under the tractor and started cleaning the 60 year old grease off the bolts of the steering box in prep of taking it apart. It became apparent real fast all the bolts where very loose and even missing one. Tighten them all and replaced the missing one and all is fine. Tractor is power washed and waiting sand blasting.

Thanks for the help!
