Fianly Drove the "A" also Carb questions

Postby cjpenny89 » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:29 am

Hey!!!!!!! I fianly got to drive the A last night! It was fun but I have some carb issues and I need to fix a half turn of slop in the steering! :(
Ok I have a 1946 A with the Zenith Carb. I see on one web site there is 2 different zenith Carbs.
My carb #'s are 52499, 9752, DB
Well I got the bowl gasget from the dealer and cleaned the carb real good. Now I got the tractor to run but it is slow and spits and sputter some when I advance the throtal. I am guessing it isn't getting enough gas. I Know I need to check the sediment bowl screen. The inlet screen in the carb is nice and clean.
Ok there is a adjustment screw in the top of the carb that faces the front of the tractor. I can screw that in or out and it doesn't make one bit of difference in the engine. Do I have plugged passage way? what does this screw do?
Also does anyone have a info sheet on settings for this carb? Float levels and such?
Thanks for the help.
Chad

The adjustment screw is the idle mixture. I believe that, as with the Cub, it adjusts fuel. So turning it in leans it out. If turning it has no effect, you have a plugged passage. You probably need to disassemble it and blow things out.

Float level is 1 5/32 which should result in a fuel level of 15/32 to 17/32. Both measurements are with the gasket in place. I don't have a float drop figure.

Issues with slop in the steering are nearly the same as with the Cub. Virtually every past thread on the Cub steering will apply directly. The major difference is the center steering arm attachment to the sector shaft (unless it has been updated with later parts). The shaft has a more or less square lower end and the arm clamps to it. If it is loose, the arm will have an up/down movement as the steering wheel moves through the free play. You MAY be able to tighten the bolt through the arm to eliminate that play. But if it is loose there, it is more likely you will need to replace the shaft and arm to fix it.

Jim,
Thought I remembered that the idle adjusting screw regulates air, thus the fuel ratio is increased when the air is reduced by screwing the idle screw in. Check my interpretation out. Cub Service Manual GSS-1411, page 2-4--Idling System.

That is correct. It is an air adjust screw.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Yes, you are right. The Cub and A idle adjustments both work the same way. But they work opposite of what I said.
