Well, perhaps not since the engine has been cranked.
Put the engine on the compression stroke #1 cylinder, TDC, with the timing pointer indicating TDC.
Reinstall the distributor with the rotor pointing to the #1 tower position on the distributor cap. It helps to mark the side of the distributor first with a crayon or something.
The distributor should be centered in the middle of the adjusting slot - bolts to hold the distributor in position.
Now static time the distributor. You may need to adjust - remove and replace the distributor once or twice - moving the rotor one gear tooth until the points open when the rotor is pointing exactly at the mark (#1 tower location) on the side of the distributor.
