Super AV??

Is there any such thing as a Super AV? Just bought a tractor this afternoon the owner said was an AV. However, he said it was a 1954 model and I noticed it had hydraulics, making it a Super A. The rear wheels were hugh, though, being 11.2x36. Is this high clearance? I know AVs were discontinued in 1947 and replaced with the Super A up to 1954. Couldn't read the serial tag because of a mounted toolbox under the seat (homemade?). Just wondering if there ever was a Super AV.

Hi Joey. Thanks for the offer to help around the house while I was gone. My son took pretty good care of the place.
I just sold 2 Super AVs. One went to Mi and the other one got parted out. As far as I know all AVs are high crop and I have told the V means vegetable. Not sure though.

I've heard the same thing - V stands for vegetable and denotes high clearance, and Super means the additon of hydraulics. Tractor I bought has hydraulics and large tires like a picture I saw in operator's manual. However, I haven't confirmed it yet with the serial tag. Plan to go pick it up on Friday - early Christmas present!!

Brought the tractor home yesterday and checked the serial number: FAAV 279667. Pretty sure that's the number - there was a tool box in the way, it was very cloudy and threatening to rain and the tag was somewhat faded.

I'm not sure what the production numbers and serial numbers were for Super AVs according to the ATIS website - do they run concurrently with the Super As? Is there a separate numbering system?

by the # it would be a late 1949 model I dont no if they were seperated from the SAs or not most likely not as The V was an add on wheels etc, the rest of the tractor was the same needed an AV they would probably just pull one out the line

Thanks, David, that seems to be what I found out this morning int he IH tractor data book a friend of mine loaned me. Numbers seem to be mixed in with the Super A serial numbers. Any idea how many were produced?

Go to Star Equipment in Hammond and talk to lil' Charlie. He can answer all of your questions about AV and Super AV's. He is also a good local parts source. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Louisiana IH Collectors Club (Chapter 31) talk to Charlie about that too.

I'm a customer of Star Equipment since I have two Cubs that I've been slowly rebuilding/repairing while they're being used. A friend of mine, Johnnie Watts, is a coworker and a member of IH Chapter 31 and has been inviting me to join. I'm considering it now because of the Super AV and would like to restore it for show at the Washington Parish show - could use the wealth of knowledge from the membership.

Another question: My hood has 3 holes on top and was told that the tractor originally had a another small gas tank - starting tank and then was switched to distillate fuel. It's missing the small tank - the tractor doesn't really need that tank now, does it? It can run on just the main tank until I can locate a small tank later?

The distillate option is functionally obsolete because the fuel really doesn't exist any more and gasoline is now the prefered fuel. Virtually all distillate tractors have been run of only gasoline for a long time. Many have been overhauled with higher compression pistons to take better advantage of gasoline.

The option included:
- starting gasoline tank.
- radiator shutters.
- temperature gage.
- carburetor with adjustable main jet.
- special manifold with an adjustable intake heater and a shield.

I'm not sure what all was on the tractor originally but I was told that I have the special manifold, but don't know about the carburetor because it was in a cardboard box. I'll try to take pics of those and post.
