Super A

Postby DanR » Fri Apr 25, 2008 10:49 am

There might be a Super A in my future to keep the Cub company. I have no idea what a Super A is selling for these days. I can tell you that she is a '52, front and rear cultivators, back tires almost new, fronts need to be replaced. She starts and runs good, no smoke. I think it has been painted or restored sometime in the past. Serial plate does not look like a repo. Most of the decals original or repos are in fair to good shape. Please give me a ballpark as the auction is tomorrow.
Thanks in advance, DanR

Wow sounds like a nice one. I'm gonna guess about $1800-2200 depending on location, crowd size and weather. Auctions are funny. Hard thing to nail down. Let us know if you get it or not and what it went for.

I have to agree with brianj. I think he is in the ballpark for Tn. Thats about what it would go for here in La. if it was as you described.

I did get the Super A. Reasonable price. It had a slight miss and I found the number 1 plug only finger tight. It has been repainted but at least 20 years ago. I'm going to drive her home this morning, about 11 miles, and clean her up. So far I don't see anything that needs fixing. I may replace the nails with cotter pins. :{_}:

Last two local machinery consignment auctions had a really nice Super A at each. Most recent one sold for $2000- with sickle bar mower - parade ready. Previous auction, $2100- with belly mower - also a really clean tractor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I'm beginning to think nails were a factory option :)

Seriously, the Super A is a great little tractor, I think you will enjoy it. Does it have a fast-hitch?

With every HP wash the S/A gets a little redder. This tractor was always barn kept. 50+ years of barn dirt covers lots of things. I want to change all fluids but can not get the level plug out of the tranny. I'm sure I can drain it but how much Hy Tran goes back in? I have not found the plugs on the finals yet probably under the next layer. I'll pull the hood today and see what's under there and see if the lights work. BTW I think Glenda (the Cub) is getting jealous.

The transmission is about 4 quarts, an additional 1/2 if it has PTO. The plugs in the finals are located similar to the Cub. Main difference is that the housings are left and right, so both plugs are in the forward position.

By the way, a lot of Super A information can be found on the manual server. Scroll down the front page to the "Other International Harvester McCormick-Deering Farmall Tractors" section and you find a link to the Super A page. Also, in the Cub section is a link "Cub Maintenance Manuals". On that page your will find "Preventive Maintenance Manual" which is for the Cub, 140, 240 and 340. Virtually all of the 140 information will apply directly to a Super A.
