Super A, tapered nuts or tapered bolts?

Seems I've seen both tapered nuts and tapered bolts (like the Cub uses, except bigger), my SA has both. On the right side, all the lower 4 holes have fine threaded studs in the final drive with tapered nuts. The left side has 3 tapered nuts and one hole takes a tapered coarse threaded bolt. Are the studs with nuts a repair?

The studs with tapered nuts are original.

This is my left side final drive, on the bottom is one tapered bolt and 3 tapered nuts, the top two holes are for tapered bolts.

Is this factory? seems both sides would be the same.

The tapered shoulder bolt is not original.

If you look at the drawbar page of the parts catalog, you will see that it lists 8 studs and 8 nuts.

I see these studs on ebay, they have coarse thread on one end that goes into the final drive and fine thread on the other with nut. It looks like if the nut doesn't come off easily, you can unscrew the stud from the final drive. I guess that explains why mine has a missing stud. I wonder if this is a common problem. I'm also wondering why Farmall went to this method of fastening instead of what was done on the Cub. Maybe to try to eliminate wallowed out or stripped threads in the final drive housing.

I don't know but I expect it is because you can get the fine threaded nuts tighter than coarse threads. Important since the drawbar attaches there and you're dealing with a bigger tractor.

Gerry,

Have you tried removing one of the studs on the bottom?
I've got a 130, which is basically the same as the SA in terms of finals.

I'm looking for a good method of removal. Not much meat to grab.

EZ,
I removed the nuts on the bottom row , all came off ok except one that was very tight and it unthreaded the stud from the drive. If you wanted to remove a stud, this is how I'd do it: run the nut pretty far in so another one would fit on the stud also, then run the second nut on the stud but reversed so the two flat sides are facing each other. Then hold the inner nut with a wrench and tighten the outside nut as tight as you can against the inner nut. Then turn the inner nut to the left and it'll remove the stud.
