I have a 295 two-bottom plow for my Super A. I have seen references to A-295 and A-295A. What is the difference between the two?

Re: A-295 vs. A-295A295A had some updates to the beams/frame for strength. IIRC the biggest change is the beams are wider. (I used to know the changes by heart but I would have to go back into the parts book now.)
I have a theory on this change but no way to substantiate it. I know of a former IH dealer salesman where my Super A came from new, he worked with the dealer from 1949 until the '70s. He told me back in his early years there, farmers were having a lot of problems with the beams bending on the A295 plows. Said it got so bad that IH flew some engineers in to look at the problem. They discovered that the steel for many of the plows' beams was faulty--hard in spots, but very soft in others. The company had the farmers return the plows, and they were replaced (or at least the beams) and the old ones cut up. Surely this was not just a issue in Wallace, NC, probably there were bunches of those plows with defective beams all over the place. Now here's my theory: I think the update to the 295A might have been part of the solution to this problem. I have a 295 I hope to restore one day. Wish I could find the leveling crank that comes up by the steering wheel post. Most of them got trashed long ago. Al "12 volt conversions are for quitters"
IH's are RED. Just say NO to yellow and white! Let us pray for farmers and all who prepare the soil for planting, that the seeds they sow may lead to a bountiful harvest.
Re: A-295 vs. A-295AThanks Al. I have an owner's manual for an "A-295A" and a sales brochure for an "A-295" - hence my question.
Mine is missing both the leveling crank and the depth control bar. The fellow that I bought the plow from was selling off a bunch of implements he had used with his Super A (just wanted to keep the tractor). A less than honest chap who got there before I did snagged the leveling crank and the depth control bar, claiming they "didn't belong with the plow". matt International Harvester Dealers of the Past
