Yet again Super A charging problems.

Well the ugly problem of charging has come back up again. Back in the spring I was having problems so I rewired, cleaned up every connection, and cleaned up the generator itself. My super A is a 6 volt system. So anyway today I went to mow and noticed that the amp meter had not moved. As a quick check I turned the lights on and it went into discharge. All spring and summer it has been working fine. So I checked all the wires again and everything looked fine. I also went so far as to disassemble and clean out the generator again. I put everything back together and same result. So I looked at the troubleshooting flow chart. Here is what happens. If I do steps 3 or 4 the amp meter will go fully into discharge. The needle can't get any lower. My intuition is telling me that I have a short somewhere, but if I disconnect all the jumpers the flow chart has you put on, the amp meter will show 0, and if I turn the lights on it will only show a quarter discharge. This floors me since I have not seen an amp meter go fully into the discharge side.

So anyway what do you guys think? Has not been a good day. I had this happen, and then my new project jeep is also giving me fits. Ah the joys of projects!

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=52524&p=435948&hilit=voltmeter#p435948. Any electrical test for the Cub is also applicable to a Super A.

Your description leads me to believe that at least two separate problems exist with your tractor. But start with the test at the link posted.

Great information! I am going to do this test tomorrow night when I get home. I am still at work and won't get home until late tonight.

Thanks!

Well this turned out to be a bad generator. I had to replace it.

Yea they are quite a HOOT. Work really well when everything works. But, when something is 60 years old you kinda figure you are doing to be some maintenance.
