Today's job was to reinstall the rebuilt PTO. First, make sure everything is cleaned up and ready for the new gasket:

Then choosing the correct number of shims for the installation of the Belt Pulley Housing:
Image

And finally...TA DA!
Image

I still need to remember to add some gear oil to the Belt Pulley Housing (sort of a "pre lube", per the service manual), but want to get the paint on before I "check for leaks"!

I began a repair of the steering wheel...we'll see just how well that turns out. Otherwise, I know what I want for my birthday!
Image

Next up, finish the steering wheel, then swap the Final. Would have done that today, but realized I needed to pick up a Differential Seal...no point putting it back together without replacing that while it is accessable.

Bored yet??!! Have a good night!

The photos and detailed descriptions are giving me the education I came here for. Of course, the idea is to never quit learning.

That being said, feel free to let us know about anything you have tried on this project that didn't go quite right so we can learn from them too. I know, I know. Mistakes are part of learning. The mistake I consistantly seem to make is not learning from other people's mistakes!

Dale, let us know if you used epoxy on the steering wheel. It worked out great on all of mine and sanded down very well. Several coats of flat black rattle can paint to seal things and they'll look like new again.

Actually, I HAVE begun to do the repair. I need to add it a little at a time, so it will take a while, but it is a good project, and worth the $50 for a new one! I will send a photo when I get done.

I KNOW we are supposed to learn from other's mistakes, so we don't make the same ones over and over, but I will post later (need to figure out how to download from my phone) a couple photos of a near disaster!! Wouldn't you know that I did not have my camera with me at the time! Later...

I am almost finished with the JB Weld and JB Quick rebuild/repair of my steering wheel...I used both because the regular JB Weld takes a looooong time to set up, where as the JB Quick sets up in about 4 minutes. The Quick is best for the spoke rebuild, where you need a thicker, 3-dimensional repair. The regular is best for a "coating"/small-crack-filling of the rim. I just used my finger to spread it around to fill all those tiny little cracks (paint will NOT fill them). One final sanding, and it should be ready for the paint.

I am also trying to figure out how to download 2 photos from my camera, since I did not have my camera the day I stood my SA on its nose while I removed the left final!! :big what: It did fine when I removed the wheel weights, then the wheel, but when I removed the final, it tipped over onto its nose. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the only damage was to the concrete floor (a chip out of it!) When the other folks in the shop walked past and asked "WHAT HAPPENED??!, I simply said I was too old to be bending over to change the seal on the differential, and that the new, higher position of the left side made cleaning and seal replacement SO much easier!! :big smile:

More later...

I removed the rear wheel weights to prepare them for paint (used a long bolt with nut through a chain on the hoist):
Image
Image

You may notice that the wheels are on the wrong side...unlike the Cub the SA is supposed to have a heavy cast disc on the right side, and a stamped, lighter plate on the left. (I assume it is to help avoid rollovers?) Unfortunately, when I reinstalled them after sandblasting, I didn't know this and got them on the wrong sides (50:50 chance and of COURSE I managed to do it wrong!) They will be swapped during painting.

Removed the foot rest and platform to straighten them with a press (talk about heavy-footed!!):
Image

Added some JB Kwik to the area on the steering shaft where the bracket wears them down (just forward of the steering wheel). After sanding, it is a great fit with a new bracket from Ralph at Barnyards Bash! Thanks Ralph!!!
Image
Image

Did some additional JB Weld and JB Quik to the steering wheel:
Image

I realized (after watching a cub throwout bearing replacement at the Bash!) that I had forgotten to adjust the clutch while it was apart. So instead of trying to do it through the access hole, I simply resplit the tractor. MUCH easier, at least when using a hoist if you are by yourself! Also reassured myself that I HAD greased the new TOB:
Image
Image

Next up is to get the painting done...just waiting for time in the paint shop. Then the massive job of reassembling components...first thing will probably be the steering gear housing and front axle, so I can get it back on it's new feet (all new tires!!) Sure hope I either remember how things go back together, or have a good enough service manual or took enough photos!!!

Later...
