I am having trouble removing the bearing on my SA's Left Final Rear Axle, so I can replace the seal and felt washer:

I have access to a press, but the wheel flange won't clear the bottom to press out the axle. Any help would be appreciated.

Dale - you need a bearing separator. Install it between the bearing and the flange to pull the bearing.

Dale,

We had the same issue at DocFest on CubBrian's 140. You will need to drop the lower part of the press down and "crib" up with something solid on the sides (6X6's), then run something solid between the cribbing to support the bearing separator that BigDog noted. The cribbing allows room for the wheel flange to travel out (down).

By something solid between the cribbing, something more substantial than lawn mower blades.... That is all that could be found and they started flexing... when the focus went to look for something a little more solid, it decided to come out.... a loud POP and a few people hit the floor...

Good luck and be safe,

Thanks Bigdog! I know I have access to one, and will try it tomorrow. Check out my question (similar) on the PTO. I thought I had already posted it, but it wasn't there just now when I looked, so am reposting it.

PS just saw dgrapes59 post and realize nothing is ever so simple, is it? At least that info clues me into a possible way around the problem...thanks both of you!

Your very timely information was just what I needed! Thanks SO much. I used a couple short pieces of 6x6's plus a couple steel plates and things came right out...well, with a few loud pops!

Gee! I wonder why it was leaking??!

I will be reassembling the entire Final next week so it can be primed and painted before installation. Thanks again, guys, for your help and, more importantly, the encouragement to not give up.
