Hi guys, I am in need of your input / opinions on what is the BEST choice of Spark Plugs for my 53 farmall super A tractor. FYI : it is all original, 6 volt positive ground wiith a Magneto Ignition system. USE : I Do NOT use the tractor much at all, start it up maybe once a week run it for a couple of hours. However in the winter I do use it more with My Buzz saw and loader. I am now running D16 Champion Plugs and am not happy with the way it starts and don't believe I'm getting a good hot spark. All of the Ignition componants are Like NEW. I have been told by some that champion plugs do NOT do well in farmall tractors and that i should change to Autolite or AC plugs. I am also being told by some that because of my minor use of the tractor and the fact that it is a Mag system that i should use a Hotter Plug. Well, now I'm a little confused and so, before i go buy new plugs i figure let me ask you guys for your expert advice. Info on what type & # plugs to or NOT to use would be Great. thanks, DanO'

I have always had good luck with Champion D21s. That is what is in my Super A, and what I have installed into my 140. Tractor runs great, and if things are properly tuned you should have no issues. I pulled out my plugs on my super A at the beginning of this season and they looked just fine. I installed them last year.

I have been running Autolite 3116's in my stuff and I just recently put in a set of Champion D21's. So far so good. I can say that my tractor cranks better right now than it ever has. I guess there is something to the "hot plug" theory. Just my 2 cents worth.

I don't know about others, but the only plug I can use in my Super A is a Champion (D21) because the space around the plug is too tight for a regular, even thin-wall, socket to go in deep enough to grab the hex on the plug. The hex sets higher on the Champion and the wrench will reach it. On the AC and Auto-lite the socket will not go in deep enough to grab it. My Super A is a 1951 and on my 1955 Farmall 100, I don't have this problem, so IH must have changed the head some between them.

My buddy Gord used Champion D-21's in his Super A and I think in his H as well as in his Cub.

For light duty & winter time use, you'll be happier with a hotter plug. The D-21 Champion is a good choice but I'm not brand loyal so choose the brand of your choice.
The tractors are older with typically worn engines and few have newly rebuilt engines. Few are used for hard work now. The hotter plug is really needed.
