On another note, I had the tractor out to get gas a mile away into town. Ran it up in 4th and found it to shimmy badly at speeds over a fast walk. Can the slop in the steering be taken up?

Check the tie rod ends and where the tie rods go into the center steering arm. You may can tighten the seats in the tie rod ends and center arm. Don't get them too tight or it will bind. Most of your wear is in the center steering box. The sector gear is probably slipping on the shaft, and the center rod may be slipping as well.

Here is my guess at what they each say:
"safety first do not make short turns at high speeds always lock brake pedals together for traveling in high gear read and observe cautions in instruction book"

"be careful stop power take-off before dismounting from tractor"

The tractor probably came out of the factory painted red then was repainted yellow several years later.

Thanks to all for the education on Farmalls "A" tractors!
I made the near 200 mile round trip to see the tractor, cash in hand and trailer in tow.
What I saw when I got there made me think it was a wasted trip. Man was this thing was rough, really scary looking.
The owner said it was a '48 but from what I've learned here it didn't appear to be a super as the torque tube was rounded and the dash was an early model.
The serial # plate wasn't there but I'm thinking its a '47. I'll post another thread with lots of pics so the tractor detectives out there can take on the challenge.
Ok back to the "A".
The fenders are missing and the rear had been modified to accept a carryall that was bolted on. The oil gauge was working through the busted glass.
The battery (dead) was relocated under the seat too.
Although I'm not big on carving up an old anything the carryalls welding and fabricating was top notch. The carryall even has a receiver hitch and chain hooks.
I'm telling you this was the ugliest tractor I'd ever seen! I was ready to walk away even with the asking price of $900. I just didn't want another money pit and time is something I don't have right now either.
Then I heard it run. Hey wait a minute, that really sounds good. I took it for a spin and had to admit it was mechanically sound. The only thing to hold me back was paint and can I find the random parts? Seat pan, oil gauge, fenders, etc...(lots of small stuff)
Well we kicked it back and forth and settled on a price. The wheel weights were taken off put in the bed and onto the trailer it went.

The final thing to say is on my wife's response. She gave me a sideways glance when I said I was going to go look at this with the trailer in tow.
I wasn't expecting her to even want to look at it when it came back with me but she gave it a good looking over and was able to get past the horible paint.
She loves it! Go figure(?).
I hope you enjoy what I've shared, there will be more when I post the pics to help narrow down the year.
For now just try and think of what you would pay for this tractor.

With the bottom pedal cover gone, it would be hard to tell if it had the foot accelerator. The pedal cover is commonly rusted out or bent over the years and removed. It had an extra slot in it for the accelerator pedal.

I've got a bunch of "A" parts if there is something you can't find. I got a couple in a deal where I bought some Cubs and probably will never use the "A" parts. PM me if intrested.

Just a quick update.
Nope, never got to getting the restoration going aside from assembling the parts I'll need.
The tractor has proven very useful and quite a bit of a workhorse. Very glad I got it.
Hoping to set it up with a hand lift snowplow someday if I can ever afford it.
My heart hasn't been in my hobbies the past few months.
Hasn't been a bad year but not a great one either. I won't complain too much as all our health has been good.
Been one thing or another though. The latest was coming home from work to find my home robbed.
SOB's did a proper job tearing my home apart.
Put me thousands in the hole making the monthly bills very tight.
Gonna take some time to come back from that one but I will eventually.

Just saw all your pics and videos I am in the process of picking up a tractor just like yours. I have been having trouble finding a trailer that I can haul it on. What is the length and width of your trailer that you used? Mine also says "Culti-vision". Also what is Seafoam? I am new to all of this so I am trying to get as much info as I can.
