Super A Fasthitch 1btm plow PROBLEMS!!!

Postby harvest » Mon Feb 27, 2012 9:08 pm

hello and thank you members for any help with my problem. i have this 53 super A with orig fasthitch and i finally got a 1btm FH plow for it. Actually the plow has stamped numbers following the letters CUB on it. so i guess its a cub plow but it is very big. i gotta think its a 14" cause its bigger than my old 194 i used to have. but maybe im off and they are just the same.. OK, to my problem..i have everything hooked up the way my cub FH tractors were that i owned in the past but with this Super A, I CANT GET THE PITCH CORRECT for starting a furrow. i did check out the schematic under cleancomputes for the SA and i have all the correct hardware. this super A has the 2 levers that one would control the rear arms and the other would control the front drawbar off the draft link . i guess it be best to take pics of my problem before i ask anymore. But just a quick monday night question? does anyone have a super A with the 1pt FH plow that has or had problems trying to do some plowing? i will follow back with pics of what im talking about... thank you guys for any help...now ive been around cubs for yrs and can make a tractor out of a basket case almost blindfolded but this Super A implement has got me in cabinets looking for grandpa's recipe! lol.. this 1pt plow has numbers reading 520260R21CUB I just cant get any pitch out of it, even when raise & lower the front drawbar! In the pics you can see it is flat when on the ground. ( no pitch) the draft link from the hydraulic is homemade ( out of my scrap pile) but i did make it to correct specs of 37.5"

The Super A plow is bigger than a Cub plow (the beam). I wouldn't be surprised if your problem all comes back to the fact you are trying to use a Cub plow. (I've never tried what you are doing.)

i think you may be right. I will fiddle with linkage tonight again... if i cant get it to pitch, i think im gonna have to torch/notch the plow beam, sleeve it & weld. i would hate to do so to orginal implements. its gotta be a beam thing....

I missed the majority of Bill Hudson's plow demonstration at the DSCF, but he had a cub on blocks to simulate plowing in a furrow. The plow should be level in the furrow and should be in a slightly downward 'sucking' position level when the tractor is level.

I believe barnyard took the following photograph:

Harvest,

I've never tried what you are doing, using a Cub plow on a Super A. In fact, never really spent any appreciable time with an A at all. So everything thing I suggest is based, primarily, on observations from your pics.

First, your plow appears to be setting almost flat on the floor. The plow should be almost flat when your A in the furrow. If it is, in fact, almost flat, shorten the right lift link using the existing holes. Shortening the link effectively increases the pitch.

Second, as Jim said, the larger beam on an A plow will fit tighter in the hitch removing a lot of unwanted movement that will be the result of using the smaller Cub plow. If you do resort to the cutting torch and welder, which I do not recommend, you have to get it right or you will be in the same shape you are now. Only then you will have a plow that doesn't work and has very little market value.

If you have to get the plowing done now and can't get your plow to work, hire someone to plow your ground and spend some time finding an A plow. You will be glad you did. There is a market for the, unmolested, plow you have.

Hope this helps
Bill

It will still be good for scrap iron.

You could try lengthening your home-made draft link, or getting the right plow. The left side of the plow has to be low enough for the plow to go in the ground too. Using blocks like Jimdawg suggested is a good way to figure out where the problem is.

jimdawg, thank you for the pic. yes, i had done this with a car ramp to act im in a furrow... ive done i think all i can, including using the rear arms to get pitch... i had lengthend the draft link to another 3" and now the drawbar will bottom out in the dirt.. Defintetly, have something wrong here... Im not plowing yet, but just wanted to get it set up so its ready to go. I will hold off torching the plow, possibly i can fetch an "A" FH plow at a swap meet this spring.. bill, yes its flat when its in the furrow, which is what i want. But i cant get no pitch to start. So that why i lengthened the draft link and it didnt help. thank you again guys for your info...

Are the rockshaft arms on the touch control set to operated independantly? Seems like I read somewhere that the arms could be "locked" together. Not sure though.

cubbrian, hello. this has independent rear & mid lift. L control is for rockshaft,R conrol is for mid lift under the fuel tank. I kinda know what you mean, i used to have a Super AV with the L&R independent rear rockshaft lift.
