Farmall Super A, AV, 1939 - 1954

I would just like to thank Dale Finch publicy for making me an EXACT copy on paper of a boomerang for my Super A snow/grader plow. that was the only piece I was missing and I'm finding out that SA parts are not as easy to find as Cub parts. She made a tracing that a draftsman would be proud of. I got to work on it right away, and 45 minutes later this is what I had.
Thanks again Dale and if there's anything you need help on, don't hesitate to ask.

No joke on trying to find Super A parts. Not easy at all.

Twotone! My pleasure...and what a beauty!! I need to post some of mine, but I don't have the decals yet...which ones did you use? He (Bubba) is going to get another workout this weekend mowing! He's gotta pay his way! Of course, my sisters and I have to plan our work so that there is enough time to give him a good bath and rubdown afterwards!!!
BTW, what is the "brace" going from the left seat support toward the throttle quadrant? Can't quite figure it out.
And can I steal your seat...and the front weights???!!!

Dale, The decals are original as is most of the tractor. I don't know why that brace is there, but I would say it was added on as it is real pitted.

If this the brace you're talking about I don't know if it's original or not. I'm glad it's there though, it has to hold 230 pounds when I hoist myself up in the seat.

Might be that someone in the past bigger than you was doing the same thing...looks like a tad more weld at the bottom of the steering support than an original weld. As I get older, and the tractors seem to get taller, I may need one of those!!!

Dale may be on the right track with the weld on the steering shaft support. My thought was a different direction. As designed, the battery box is bolted to the instrument panel. Thus the battery box serves as a brace for the panel. If those 2 bolts are left out (as is frequently the case), the panel isn't sufficiently supported and can move front to back with little pressure. This messes up both the governor and Touch-Control settings. The home-made brace would provide the same support. It would be easier to just put the 2 bolts in, but I've seen more effort than that used to get around other things that were as simple.

Jim, you're right on the money. Both my battery box bolts are missing. I hope I have a good battery, because that one is a lot of work to change. I should have put the bolts in when I had the tank off to rebuild the TC unit.
Also, that piece of strap steel has a big crack in it so I suppose I should get after that too. Someone did a pretty good job of installing it though, it has a perfect twist and bend where it bolts to the trans cover.

OK. Battery box bolts are in. I can see why they weren't. The battery won't fit with them in- it's that tight. I also made a new support bracket for good measure. I don't mind little projects like this, but this tractor needs what Dales needed, a front trans seal. This summer would be the best time to do it as I use this tractor the least in the summer. I'm not looking foreward to a split though.

What does your bypass block and valve operate?

My SA NEEDS a brace like that. The steering post moves back and forth about 1" as I'm cranking on the wheel with the heavy 1000 loader up there... Thanks for the idea!

The brace is super easy to make. Mine is rock solid without it, so I just used some 1/8 x 1 in flat stock. If you have that much play you might want to use some angle or heavy gauge steel.
