OK, it is an early A with a Super A/C engine block. The A did use 2 different sizes of oil filters. Early was tall, late was short. If your parts man can't find a listing for a '40 A that comes up with a taller filter, ask for one for something like a '50 M. It should be the same diameter as the 1153 but a couple inches taller.

Not to confuse the issue, but my late 53 super a takes a NAPA 1172 gold filter,or a Fleet Guard LF 618 oil filter.

The early A's took a taller filter. Look at the height of the canister in the second photo and compare it to yours.
