Pins and Shaft retainers?

Postby minkbigbird » Fri May 30, 2014 3:10 am

Hi. Can any one help with what was used to retain the pins and shaft rods in position when new? Mine has a collection old bolts, nails bent over, and large split pins I have spent a lot of time looking on the net but there seems to be no standard as to what people use as long as the pins dose not fall out seems to be the go. Mine is a 1951 SAV would "R" pin clips been around back then? Thank's

I believe the "correct" thing to use would be cotter pins (i.e. "split pins"?).

Personally, I use what you call "R" clips wherever possible. They make for a neater looking installation and are easier to remove.

If you're feeling particularly masochistic, use roll pins.

Hi. Thanks Matt for taking the time to reply I will go with Cotter Pins / Split Pins as once it goes together it's not coming apart.

I am telling my age, but years ago many of the items that were removed ind reinstalled regularly, such as connections to rock shafts, etc used an e clip. so called be cause it resembled a lower case "e", except the center part was not closed.

The only thing wrong with owning a old tractor is that all the owners are as old or older than the machines they drive. I should talk I'm 69.This is my retirement project.

My 48 cub has a decal on it' that reads:

1848 model cub
1948 model owner
not all parts are original
on either one.

The 49 has one that reads:

I don't do
HURRY UP well
