Timing... HELP!

Postby AgTires4295 » Sat Aug 16, 2014 12:35 pm

Okay so I have had this A project going for awhile now. I'm standing in front of it currently and have limited time as it lives in MD and I'm in VA. I filed the carbon crud off of the points and in doing so have messed up the timing by turning the crank to watch the points open/close (stupid me). I have timed my Cub before and I think this is relatively similar but dont have a notch/pointing finger on the engine to know. I have the #1 cylinder at top dead center (pressure pushing against my finger as the cylinder compresses upward).

Where do I go from here? Is the magneto supposed to click before or after I leave the crank alone to put the distributer back together?

Ive used the search engine on this site and get everything but what I want answered it seems.

Thanks!

So I fiddled with the timing all day and have gotten closer than ever before. I went to start it and it sounded like it was firing on 1 or more cylinders but again in wrong time. Had a few chugga-luggs followed by backfires but nothing more than a seconds worth.

Ive called out of work tomorrow and am staying with friends here until tomorrow just to get this thing up and running.

Does anybody have anything???

Buuump!

TDC should put your timing mark lined up, then the click. Check out this post by John. viewtopic.php?f=140&t=83108
Will help you get the points lined up properly.
Another post, and this should get you in time.

Thanks for the post. Ive made numerous attempts to follow what I can and have been working on it since 8am. Im in worse shape now than ever before. There are no timing marks anywhere on the tractor. None. I've been working for 2 days at this just to get it in correct time and have failed miserably in the process. I dropped the magneto and I'm pretty sure its broken. I broke the distributer cap in the process. Now everything is in pieces and I'm up a creek with this thing. Now I have to drive 3 hours back home in total disappointment.

Well God has blessed me with the tiniest bit of patience to see this through. The mag did not break and I super glued the distributer cap back together. I sat there looking at the tractor realizing that I needed the #1 cylinder in TDC while I had the mag rotator matching up with everything else and further matching up to where I thought the distributer cap went. I had previously marked where the cap came in contact with the metal.

Feeling defeated and just putting it all back together for storage in the barn, I figured I would crank it one last time just for the heck of it since I wont likely see it again for a month. PUTT PUTT BRRRRR it started firing on ether!!!!!!! Now I'm just waiting for my old man to get back from town so he can be here when I turn the gas on and can see it run in all of its glory. He has been there since the beginning either as the provider of good company, drinks, tools or help as he periodically checked in with me on it.

While reading this, you folks are officially the first to know that its running! Its been more than 2 decades since it has breathed life!

WOW what a feeling!

Thanks David! Here's the video my Dad shot during the first start. I think he was more excited than I was! Glorious moment.
