Farmall Super A too fast in 1st gear

Postby Hdmcraney » Sun Jan 25, 2015 10:59 pm

I bought this tractor to work my garden. Dad had a cub that worked great but sold it years ago
I got all the attachment with it and dreamed of being able to work my garden quick and simple
It works great but it is way too fast in 1st gear. I would be hard pressed to be able to walk beside it
any idea what I can do to slow the thing down. I operate it at idle and any more throttle would have to jog to keep up with it
in 1st gear

All in what you are used to. I gardened with a Super A for years before I got a Cub. The Cub is definitely slower and works nice when the plants are small. Don't cultivate too close to the plants until they are big enough not to be covered up, or use cultivator shields. You'll like not having to run wide open to get enough speed to move the dirt effectively when the crop gets bigger.

Both the Cub and Super A have the same speed 1st gear: 2.3MPH with stock tires.

If someone installed vastly oversized tires on the Super A, that would make the tractor move faster than normal. What size tires are on the tractor? Stock size should be 9.5x24.

Also, does the tractor idle down? If the engine is running at a high RPM even if the lever is in the "idle" position due to a governor issue, the tractor would move faster than normal.

The only practical way to slow the tractor down any more is with smaller tires. If the tractor has 11.2x24 or 12.4x24, dropping to 8.3x24 will make a significant difference in speed. Unfortunately 8.3x24 is the smallest tractor tire you can get in a 24" rim size. There are smaller tires with tractor tread but they meant for ground-driven implements; a tractor would tear them up.

My Super A snails along in 1st. I can walk faster than it even at 3/4 throttle. Something isn't right.

Yeah, something isn't right unless the tractor has some huge oversize tires. Almost sounds like it's in 2nd or 3rd gear. Stating the obvious, a Cub has a 3 speed trans and the Super A has a 4 speed. Maybe?? it's not in 1st gear.
