"Seed Plate Drive" on Final Drive Housing

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Thu Apr 16, 2015 11:07 am

I have a tractor that doesn't have the drive shaft for the planter/fertilizer gear, and need to install one on it. I do have a parts tractor with the "seed plate drive" attachment (as it is called in the parts catalog), but was wondering if all of the parts it mentions in the catalog are necessary. I notice that it mentions an o-ring and another part or two. In the past I've installed them on tractors and didn't use those parts. All I used was the center bolt, driveshaft (bushing), and the seal retainer plate that holds it all together. Do I need the other parts listed or are those already in the bull gear housing?

Also, is the seal available that goes in the seal retainer housing? The last one I installed the seal was still good, but the one I am using now could use a new one. Does the seal even come out of the housing to be replaced?

The oring and other parts were added to reduce oil leakage around the center bolt. The last seal I got fit directly into the final drive, the retainer housing was not used. I have replaced the seal and reused the retainer as well.

Thanks Daniel. I've found a couple of part numbers and I'm still not sure which ones they are....(newer bigger seal or retainer seal). Do you have a part number for each one? I would like to make sure I order the right one. I can't get one of the part numbers to even cross over. Thanks for the heads up about the o-ring. I'm sure that is a common size so I might have one of those already.

Also, I've noticed that this seal (or seals) look like they are the same part for the Farmall Cub as well as the Farmall Super A/140 tractor. Is this true even thought the final drive housings are totally different? Sure would be nice to know if they both used the same part.

Let me look. I may have one that I can see the numbers on.

I believe 384807R91 is the larger seal for use withoutthe retainer. 273563R91 is the seal for use with the retainer. It doesn't really matter, if you want to use the bigger one just discard the retainer and put some small corks into the bolt holes. If the seed plate drive shaft is worn with a groove, you may need to replace or repair it or it will destroy the new seal. Later tractors also had a special washer with a groove for an extra oring and I believe a slightly longer bolt.

My loboy does not have a seed plate drive so I cannot say on similarities with the Super A -140.
