Electrical questions on my A?

Postby scmoore61 » Sun Jun 28, 2015 7:40 pm

Hello Again, I found my serial number and my tractor is 1945. I am pretty sure this was switched at some point to be neg. ground. Is there anything you can see in these pictures that would tell a person that knows something about these tractors if this is set up for pos. or neg ground? Most of the wires where cut off and taped over. I'm guessing the piece of cooper tubing in the fuse holder was not how these came from the factory

A 45 would have been positive ground originally.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Yes I have found the diagrams for how it was when new. But this has most of the wires cut and the ends taped off. I took the starter off and tested it and it works. So I want to wire this up with a new battery and have it turn over without burning something up.

Those look like original type parts. Wire it up to the original diagram with a positive ground. Polarize the generator before starting it up.

By the way, your hood says "A" but you have the front end of a B. You may simply have the wrong decal or may have a mix and match tractor. What does the back look like?

I was going off the sticker. The serial number comes back as a B.

What does polarize the generator mean?

It means you have to tell the generator which way the battery is connected. Details are here:

I'm wiring this up today and have one more question. The kill switch in the diagrams show one wire going to the coil. Mine has a second wire that was going to the starter. Should I just remove the second wire?

The diagram shows wiring for a magneto, which is how your tractor came form the factory. Your picutes show yours has been converted to battery ignition. Leave the ignition switch wiring as you found it.

Use a test light or voltmeter. switch on should have voltage at switch side of coil. If not work back toward switch to learn why. If voltage at coil check distributor side of coil. Should have voltage with points open, no voltage with points closed.

check point adjustment and dress them with a point file. Points provide ground when they close, so that is when voltage on dist. side of coil should go away.
