Replacing 90 degree drum with Vbelt Pulley

Postby Zooskiami » Wed Jul 08, 2015 12:41 pm

Hello everyone. I recently inherited a 1950 Super A - bought new by my wife's grandfather in 1950 - and I'm working on bringing it back to life to use around our small 6 acre farm. I've found and printed a copy of the owners manual, and I've found a local L59 belly mower that would be perfect to mow my 4 acre horse field...however all of the pictures that I've found of belt routing obviously require a single channel pulley on the 90 degree PTO. Mine has the 8" wide drum pulley, which my father-in-law remembers using as a child for days spent shucking corn and grinding feed. Anyway, I'm not sure how to go about planning on swapping out the drum pulley for a vbelt pulley. Has anyone made this change and if so, do I need to do anything other than pull the drum off and replace it with the correct pulley and bushing? I've seen some on eBay, and read somewhere in forums that you can find the pulley and bushing on McMaster or Motion, but if someone has details, please share! Thanks!

This will work but I believe the belt pully runs at a slower speed than the regular PTO. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong about this. You might have to size the vbelt pully to get the desired rpm to run the belly mower. I used a SA in a similar situation with a IH 59 inch mower for several years but can't remember the details. According to tractordata.com, the pulley is 8.5" in diameter, and spins at 1157 RPM (belt speed is 2574 ft/min) when the PTO is running at 539 RPM.

I have seen people successfully weld a cast iron belt pulley to the rim of the flat belt pulley. I'm going to do this with one of my Super C's.

Will the belt pulley still line up with the mule drive pulleys in that situation?

I believe the shaft underneath the belt pulley on a Super A is a 6-spline 1-3/8" diameter shaft, same as the PTO. There are Browning style split taper bushing hubs made to fit this type of shaft. Unfortunately our favorite pulley and hydraulic store, surpluscenter, does not seem to carry them but I did find the hubs on Amazon. surpluscenter does have an assortment of pulleys.

Also check mill supply ventors like McMaster-Carr, Motion Industries, WW Grangier, etc.

I think you will find 6-spline 1 1/8 diameter.
