IS it a 49 or a 1950 Super A???

Postby BullDAWG » Fri Jul 10, 2015 12:05 am

Could my 1949 Super A have MANY parts that ALL have the letter "T" stamped on them and yet the data/serial # tag under the seat says its a 1949. WHAT gives? I thought "T" codes are for 1950, I would understand it more if the parts were made in 49 and it said it was a 1950 year model. But could this be right? or is something fishy ? Will have to look better at the tag n try to get serial #.
Thankz ya'll...

A couple possibilities I can think of:

1. Someone swapped out the seat support with one from a 1949.

2. "Officially" IH used T, U, and V casting codes during 1950 for some reason that perhaps Jim Becker is aware of. Maybe they started using "T" in late 1949?

If your casting dates are all in "late 1950" #2 would make the most sense to me. It would stand to reason that castings made in late 1950 would have a "V" casting code, assuming they used the codes sequentially, rather than simultaneously. Thus, your casting codes would actually be late 1949.

T was used in 1950.

U, V (if any) and W were used in '51.

If the date codes say "T" and the serial number says 1949, either a digit of the serial plate is something other that it appears (misread) or the plate migrated from another tractor.

Jim u are right, after a better cleaning the code on the seat tag is from early 1950 (I think) and so are most of the parts on her, so now the question is is this a white super a ??? If it is then I may have gotten a better deal than I EVER DREAMED OF.... And I then need to change my plans on painting her red w/ the leftover red I have from the cubs I painted. (they wee a 1950 n a 51 cub, but the 50 cub was a late 50 so it wasn't a white cub) This may change everything!!!! :{_}: the # looks like 2900XX. is this a white or is it just after they swapped back to red? If she's a demo then I GOTTA DO HER IN WHITE (though I'd probably sell her after n get me a 130-140 n hopefully some more implements in the swap)

290XXX would have been built in June 1950, after the white demo production was over.

thanks jim, n that means I can use her as a work tractor, i wouldn't want a white demo used as a daily work machine. So now its back to using my leftover paint from the cubs on her... n I still think I got a good deal on her, was just hopping it was a GREAT DEAL lol.....

I'd do some checking for white paint just to be sure, but I believe Jim is correct.

I think my mistaken notion that U and V were also 1950 casting codes comes from Ken Updike. You might want to have a little discussion with him at the next IH Authors' Guild meeting, Jim :)

1951, maybe. I seem to recall that from one of the IH books, maybe the Letter Series Originality Guide by Guy Fay. Either way the only 1950 code was T.
