140 Hydraulics quit

Postby 1978cub » Sun Jul 19, 2015 9:44 pm

While mowing today the hydraulic lift stopped working completely. It was slow and unresponsive for a few minutes then they stopped completely(both front and rear). I could see NO visible leaks. Any ideas?

Have you checked for oil level ? Was there any noise(s) before it quit?

Pump failure or the relief valve in the hydraulic block failed. Check the fluid level or anything clogging the filter screen too.

Well the fluid level was very low. After adding quite a bit it worked for about 5 minutes then stopped again. I suspect the fluid is leaking into the crankcase at the pump. Does that make sense or are there other possibilities?

Makes sense. Check your engine oil level. If its too high then there is your problem. Take the pump off and get new seals. Simple fix if thats the case.

It was the pump seal. Seems like the old pump is shot and had that seal replaced before.

well it might be shot or the new seal you put on just happened to go on the worn spot on the shaft and leaked. Check n see if shaft is worn and if a new seal can fit onto the unworn area of the shaft... (just might save you some big bucks $$$$)

Is a speedi sleeve a possibility if the shaft is badly worn?

I am going with a new aftermarket pump. Reliability is very important to me on this tractor.I will probably list the old one for someone that wants to invest time into it. It pumps just fine but the seal part needs some work.

If reliability is your concern, fix the original pump. The aftermarket ones don't live up to the originals with regards to quality.

I might do that so I will have a spare to interchange if I have another failure.
